Note* The first who bore the title of Earl of Warwick, after the NormanConquest, was Henry de Newburgh (so called from the castle of that namein Normandy), a younger son of Roger de Bellomont, Earl of Mellent. Whenthis eminent person obtained that earldom is not exactly ascertained, butSir William Dugdale presumed the period to be toward the close of theConqueror's reign, 'for then,' saith he, 'King William, having begirtWarwick with a mighty ditch, for the precinct of its walls, and erectedthe gates at his own charge, did promote this Henry to the earldom, andannexed thereto the royalty of the borough, which at that time belongedto the crown.' But, though Henry de Newburgh was made Earl of Warwick bythe first Norman sovereign, he was not invested with all the landsattached to the earldom until the ensuing reign, as we find WilliamRufus, soon after his accession to the throne, conferring upon him thewhole inheritance of Turchil de Warwick, a Saxon, who, at the coming ofDuke William, had the reputation of earl; and thenceforth the 'bear andragged staff,' the device of Turchil's family derived from the chivalrousGuy, Earl of Warwick, was assumed by the first of the Newburgh dynasty,and it has been continued ever since as a badge of the successive Earlsof Warwick. The name of this Henry, Earl of Warwick, appears as awitness to the charter of King Henry I, whereby that prince confirmed thelaws of Edward the Confessor, and granted many other immunities to theclergy and laity. His lordship m. Margaret, dau. of Geffrey, Count deMoreton, and sister of Rotrode, Earl of Perch, and had issue, two daus.,whose names are not mentioned, and five sons, viz., Roger, his successor;Henry; Geffrey; Rotrode, bishop of Evreux; and Robert, seneschal andjustice of Normandy, who was a great benefactor to the abbey of Bec inwhich he was afterwards shorn a monk and d. in 1123. This Earl Henry commenced imparking Wedgenock, near his castle ofWarwick, following the example of his sovereign, King Henry, who made thefirst park that had ever been in England, at Woodstock. His lordship,who was as memorable for pious foundations as distinguished for militaryachievements, d. in 1123 and was s. by his eldest son, Roger deNewburgh. Henry, younger brother of Robert, count of Meulan, was lord of Neubourg,near Beaumont-le-Roger in Normandy, and Rufus gave him the great midlandestate of the English noble, Thurkill of Arden. The new earl was anintimate friend of Henry I, whose succession he did much to promote. Hedied in 1123 and was buried at Preaux (Normandy).   1. [Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica CD, 1996] Brian, also called BRIAN BORU (b. 941, near Killaloe, Ire.--d. 1014,Clontarf, near Dublin), high king of Ireland from 1002 to 1014. In 976Brian became king of a small state, later called Dál Cais, and also kingof Munster, whose Eóghanachta rulers had been defeated (964) by Brian'shalf brother. Brian destroyed first the Eóghanachta septs and then theNorthmen, constructing a fleet to drive them from the Shannon. Under hisrule Munster became a unified and powerful state. He invaded Ossory(983), won control of the southern half of Ireland from the high kingMaelsechlainn II (997), replaced him as high king (1002), and in duecourse received the submission of every lesser ruler. The men of Leinsterand the Northmen of Dublin united against him in 1013, enlisting helpfrom abroad. The decisive battle at Clontarf, near Dublin, on April 23,1014, found Brian too old to take active part, and the victory was won byhis son Murchad. A little group of Northmen, flying from the battlefield,stumbled on Brian's tent, overcame his bodyguard, and hacked the agedBrian to death. His fame was so great that the princes descended fromhim, the O'Briens, subsequently ranked as one of the chief dynasticfamilies of the country.
