| Note* | VERE - Earls of Oxford, Marquess of Dublin, Duke of Ireland Earldom, Creation of the Empress Maud and confirmed by Henry II, anno1135. Marquessate, Creation of Richard II, 1385 Dukedom, Creation of Richard II, 1385 LINEAGE: 'The noblest subject in England, and indeed, as Englishmenloved to say, the noblest subject in Europe, was Aubrey de Vere, twentieth and last of the old Earls of Oxford. He derived his titlethrough an uninterrupted male descent from a time when the families ofHoward and Seymour were still obscure, when the Nevills and Percysenjoyed only a provincial celebrity, and when even the great name ofPlantagenet had not yet been heard in England. One chief of the house ofDe Vere held high command at Hastings; another had marched with Godfreyand Tancred over heaps of slaughtered Moslems to the sepulchre of Christ. The first Earl of Oxford had been minister to Henry Beauclerc. The thirdearl had been conspicuous among the lords who extorted the great charterfrom John. The seventh earl had fought bravely at Cressy and Poictiers. The thirteenth earl had, through many vicissitudes of fortune, been thechief of the party of the Red Rose and had led the van on the decisiveday at Bosworth. The seventeenth earl had shone at the court of Elizabethand had won for himself an honourable place among the early masters ofEnglish poetry. The nineteenth earl had fallen in arms for the Protestantreligion and for the liberties of Europe under the walls of Maestricht. His son, Aubrey, in whom closed the longest and most illustrious line ofnobles that England has seen, a man of loose morals but of inoffensivetemper and of courtly manners, was lord-lieutenant of Essex and colonelof the Blues.' To these remarks, the author of this work, in hisVicissitudes of Families, ventured thus to refer:--- 'Such is Macaulay's glowing and eloquent eulogium on the De Veres -- soeloquent, indeed, that one regrets that the panegyric is somewhatexaggerated and scarcely consistent with recorded fact. The line of theEarls of Oxford was certainly the longest but, just as certainly, not themost illustrious that England has ever seen. In personal achievement andhistorical importance, the De Veres can bear no comparison with theTalbots, the Howards, the Nevills, the Percys, or the Scropes; inantiquity of descent, the Courtenays, the De Bohuns, and the Beauchampswere in all respects their equals, and in splendour of alliances, many aless distinguished family far surpassed them. There was scarcely one ofour grand old house of the times of the Henrys and the Edwards that hadnot more of royal blood. Nevertheless, I must freely admit, although Icannot subscribe to the pre-eminence Macaulay assigns, that this famoushouse, if inferior to any, was only so to the very first, to the mosthistoric and to the most illustrious of our ancient nobility.' The first mention of the De Veres is in the General Survey of Englandmade by William the Conqueror wherein Alberic de Ver possessed numerouslordships in different shires, of which Chenisiton (now Kensington], co.Middlesex, was one, and Hedingham, co. Essex, where his castle wassituated, and where he chiefly resided, another. This Alberic m. Beatrix,Countess of Ghisnes in her own right, by whom he had five sons, Alberic,Geoffrey, Roger, Robert and William. Alberic de Vere, in the latter endof his days assumed the cowl, and d. a monk in 1088; he was buried in thechurch of Colne Priory, which he founded, and was s. by his son, Albericde Vere. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited, and ExtinctPeerages, Burke's Peerage, London, 1883, p. 549, Vere, Earls of Oxford,&.] ---------- Vere FAMILY, noted English family that held the hereditary office of lordgreat chamberlain from 1133 to 1779 and the earldom of Oxford from 1142to 1703. Its founder, Aubrey de Vere (c. 1040-1112), was a Norman who cameto England with William the Conqueror and was granted lands by the latterin Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and Middlesex. | Note* | Richard FitzGilbert, having accompanied the Conqueror into England, participated in the spoils of conquest and obtained extensive possessionsin the new and old dominions of his royal leader and kinsman. In 10873we find him joined under the designation of Ricardus de Benefacta, withWilliam de Warren, in the great office of Justiciary of England, withwhom, in three years afterwards, he was in arms against the rebelliouslords Robert de Britolio, Earl of Hereford, and Ralph Waher, or Guarder,Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk, and behaved with great gallantry. Butafterwards, at the time of the General Survey, which was towards theclose of William's reign, he is called Ricardus de Tonebruge, from hisseat at Tonebruge (now Tunbridge) in Kent, which town and castle heobtained from the archbishop of Canterbury in lieu of the castle ofBrion, at which time he enjoyed thirty-eight lordships in Surrey,thirty-five in Essex, three in Cambridgeshire, with some others in Wiltsand Devon, and ninety-five in Suffolk, amongst those was Clare, whence hewas occasionally styled Richard de Clare, and that place in a few yearsafterwards becoming the chief seat of the family, his descendants aresaid to have assumed thereupon the title of Earls of Clare. This greatfeudal lord m. Rohese, dau. of Walter Giffard, Earl of Buckingham, andhad issue, Gilbert, his successor, Roger, Walter, Richard, Robert, a dau.m. to Ralph de Telgers, and a dau. mo. to Eudo Dapifer. Richard deTonebruge, or de Clare, whose is said to have fallen in a skirmish withthe Welsh, was s. by his eldest son, Gilbert de Tonebruge.
