| Note* | Peter was noted in his day as a 'gentleman very serviceable in church and state.' He was a councillor, judge, etc. He was interested in the purchase of Nantucket, where he may have lived for a short time, but passed most of his life at Dover, New Hampshire. He was at different times chief-justice and associate-justice of the superior court of New Hampshire, and for several years a councillor of that province. He moved in 1690 to Exeter, New Hampshire. COFFIN, Peter, jurist, was born in Devonshire, England, in 1630; son of Tristram Coffin (born 1609, died 1681), the ancestor of all in the United States bearing the name of Coffin. [See life of Tristram Coffin (1881) by Allen Coffin.] Peter removed to Dover, N. H., about 1650, and there became a successful merchant. He was deputy to the general court in Boston in 1672, 1673 and 1679. In 1689, when Dover was destroyed by the Indians, he and his family were captured but escaped and the next year removed to Exeter. He was chief justice of the superior court, 1697-98, and associate justice, 1695-1712. He was married to Abigail, daughter of Edward Starbuck. He died in Exeter, N. H., March 21, 1715. Tristram Coffin1 (M) b. c 1525, d. s 1602 | ||
| Note | TRISTRAM COFFIN, of Butlers, parish of Brixton, county of Devon, England, made his will 16 November 1601, which was proved at Totness, in the same county, in 1602. He left legacies to Joan, Anne and John, children of Nicholas Coffin; Richard and Joan, children of Lionel Coffin; Philip Coffin and his son Tristram; and appointed Nicholas, son of Nicholas Coffin, his executor. Nicholas Coffin, of Butlers, in the same parish, in his will dated 12 September 1613, and proved 3 November 1613, mentions his wife, Joan; sons, Peter, Tristram, Nicholas and John; daughter, Ann; and Joan, a daughter of one of his sons. He was grandfather of the emigrant to New-England. Peter Coffin, of Brixton, by his will dated 21 December 1627, and proved 13 March 1628, provides that his wife, Joan, shall have possession of the land, &c., during her life, and that then said property shill go to his son and heir, Tristram, 'who is to be provided for according to his degree and calling;' and that his son John is to have certain property when he shall be twenty years of age. He speaks of his daughters, Joan, Deborah, Eunice and Mary, as being under twenty years of age. He refers to his tenement, called Silferhay, in Butlers, and to his brother Nicholas. He was father of the emigrant. John Coffin, of Brixton, in his will dated 4 January 1628, and proved 3 April 1628, appoints his nephew Tristram executor, and gives legacies to Joan, Deborah, Eunice, Mary and John, all under twelve years of age. The family is one of those, which have always used arms in this country, though unable to prove a right to them, inherited from ancestors ranking among the gentry of England. In Prince's Worthies of Devonshire may be read an account of the family of the name of Coffin which claims to have been seated at Portledge, in the parish of Alwington, in the northern part of that county, since the time of the Norman conquest. The family sent off branches into different parts of Devonshire and it is highly probable that the Coffins of this country are descended from some such branch, but the connection has not yet been proved. Smith's MS. Promptuariurn Armorum contains a drawing of the arms borne by 'Sir William Coffin of Portledge in Devon of ye Privy Cha. to K. H. 8 '-Vert, five cross-crosslets argent, between four plates.-Heraldic Journal, vol. iii.-These are the arms used by the family in this country.2,3 | |

| Note* | Mary married Nathaniel Starbuck, at Nantucket, and all accounts agree in representing her as an extraordinary woman. In the language of John Richardson, an early writer, 'the Islanders esteemed her as a Judge among them, for little of moment was done without her.' It was her custom to attend their town meetings, where she took an active part in the debates, usually commencing her address with 'my husband thinks' so and so; but Richardson says, that 'she so far exceeded him in soundness of judgment, clearness of understanding, and an elegant way of expressing herself, and that not in art affected strain, bit very natural to her, that it tended to lessen the qualifications of tier husband.' In 1701 she became a Quakeress, took the spiritual concerns of the whole Island under her special superintendence, was speaker in their religious meetings, wrote the quarterly epistles, and was distinguished in every relation in life. Respecting her domestic economy, the same author observes: 'the order of the house was such in all the parts thereof as I had not seen the like before; the large and bright-rubbed room was set with suitable seats chairs, [for a meeting] so that I did not see anything wanting according to place, but something to stand on, for I was not free to set my feet upon the fine cane chair, lest I should break it.' | Note* | John Greenleaf resided in Newbury until his death. He was admitted to the First Congregational Church in Newbury, with his first wife, Elizabeth Hills, on 31 Jan. 1696. He was buried near the north corner of the 'Oldtown' meetinghouse. The house of worship occupying that site in 1854, probably covers the grave. NOTE. There was three John Greenleaf's living in Newbury at the same time, viz.: John, Senior, the son of Stephen; John, Junior, the son of Samuel, and nephew of John, Senior; John, third, the son of John, Senior; and they arc thus distinguished in the Newbury records. John Senior, is sometimes called 'Quartermaster John.' Please include sources for your data.1 | |

| Note* | Elizabeth Greenleaf married Col. Thomas Noyes. She was his second wife, the first being Martha, daughter of Daniel and Sarah Pierce. Daniel Pierce, blacksmith, founder of the Pierce family of Newbury, Massachusetts, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, came from Ipswich, England, 1634, in ship Elizabeth. He was aged 25 and was made freeman 2 May 1638. He removed from Watertown to Newbury in the same year. Daniel and Sarah Pierce had 1) Daniel, 2) Joshua, 3) Martha, born in Newbury, Massachusetts, 14 Feb. 1648-9, married Col. Thomas Noyes, of Newbury, 28 Dec. 1669. She died 3 Sept. 1674. Her husband married Elizabeth Greenleaf, 24 Sept. 1677, and they had eight children. The Newbury town records show Sarah Pierce was there married 24 Aug. 1659, to Caleb Moody, son of William, the first of that family in Newbury. There cannot be much doubt that Sarah, the wife of Caleb Moody, was a daughter of Daniel and Sarah Pierce, and that she was born in Watertown, Massachusetts. 1 December 1686. Capt. Daniel Pierce and Stephen Greenleaf, Sr., were added to the deacons, as Overseers of the Poor. Born on April 9 or Nov. 15. Please include sources for your data.1 | |

| Note* | Another source puts birthday on Sept. 12, 1640 in Brixton, England. A number of James descendants during the Revolutionary period adhered to the crown. James Coffin (1640-1720) Your eighth great-grandfather was James Coffin, fourth child of Tristram and Dionis. He was born in England on August 12, 1640. He moved to Nantucket with his father and the first settlers but left shortly thereafter and moved to Dover, New Hampshire. He lived there and was a member of the Church in 1671 and on May 31st of that year was made a freeman. Soon thereafter, perhaps having escaped for a while the heavy weight of his illustrious father, he returned to Nantucket with his wife, Mary Severance, of Salisbury, Massachusetts, who he had married on December 3rd, 1663. Great-grandfather James filled a number of important offices on Nantucket including Judge of the Probate Court. He had fourteen children with Mary, and two of them, John and Elizabeth were your great-grandparents. Great-grandfather James Coffin had three other illustrious descendants. General John Coffin and his brother, Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin, were loyalists to Great Britain during the War of Independence. Lucretia Coffin Mott was also descended from James and was one of the foremost advocates against slavery. A devout Quaker, she was known as the most gifted woman of her time, a feminist in her own era. Please include sources for your data.1 | |
| Note | May have been married in New Hampshire. NEHG Register, Vol. 7, p. 117 indicates they were married in New Hampshire by Captain Pike on 1 November 1663.1 | |
