Note Duncan I (d. Aug. 1, 1040, near Elgin, Moray, Scot.), king of the Scotsfrom 1034 to 1040. Duncan was the grandson of King Malcolm II (ruled1005-34), who irregularly made him ruler of Strathclyde when that regionwas absorbed into the Scottish kingdom (probably shortly before 1034).Malcolm violated the established system of succession whereby thekingship alternated between two branches of the royal family. UponMalcolm's death, Duncan succeeded peacefully, but he soon faced therivalry of Macbeth, Mormaor (subking) of Moray, who probably had a betterclaim to the throne. Duncan besieged Durham unsuccessfully in 1039 and inthe following year was murdered by Macbeth. Duncan's elder son laterkilled Macbeth and ruled as King Malcolm III Canmore (1058-93).2

Note Malcolm III CANMORE (b. c. 1031--d. Nov. 13, 1093, near Alnwick,Northumberland, Eng.), king of Scotland from 1058 to 1093, founder of thedynasty that consolidated royal power in the Scottish kingdom. The son of King Duncan I (reigned 1034-40), Malcolm lived in exile inEngland during part of the reign of his father's murderer, Macbeth(reigned 1040-57). Malcolm killed Macbeth in battle in 1057 and thenascended the throne. After the conquest of England by William theConqueror, in 1066, Malcolm gave refuge to the Anglo-Saxon prince Edgarthe Aetheling and his sisters, one of whom, Margaret (later St.Margaret), became his second wife. Malcolm acknowledged the overlordship of William in 1072 but neverthelesssoon violated his feudal obligations and made five raids into England.During the last of these invasions he was killed by the forces of KingWilliam II Rufus (reigned 1087-1100). Except for a brief interval afterMalcolm's death, the Scottish throne remained in his family until thedeath of Queen Margaret, the Maid of Norway, in 1290. Of Malcolm's sixsons by Margaret, three succeeded to the throne: Edgar (reigned1097-1107), Alexander I (1107-24), and David I (1124-53). Yes, there were 2 Sir Henry Greenes, and both were Lord Chief Justice ofEngland. The older w as the son of the younger, and he also had a older son by the name of Thomas Greene. The elder Sir Henry was the largest private land owner in England at the time, and bought Green's Norton in addition to owning over 30 estates, some say including the Boketon Estate, where our originalGreen ancestor firs t assumed the name Greene. Many researcher do not believe the story of Aklexander de Boketon de Greene receiving the estae from KingJohn in 1202. The y feel that a Green probably married in to the Boketon family and inherited the estate.
The elder Sir Henry Greene favored his second son, Henry Greene, and arranged for him to inherit about 1/2 of his estate, which was unheard of at the time, since Thomas Greene was his eldest son. This took an order from the King to allow such an arrangement, but Thomas Greene was happy with about 15 estates and a ton of money, and his younger brother, Sir Henry Greene went on tobecome more famous th an his father, but unfortunately was be-headed on either September 2, 1399 or July 30, 1399 depending on which date you believe.
The elder Sir Henry Greene was born about 1310 and died about 1370 and wasmarried to Catherin e de Drayton in about 1333. They had 4 sons and 2daughters, and it is my belief that most o f the Greens descend from one ofthese children. The eldest son, Thomas was born about 1341 a nd marriedIsabella Mablethorpe and this is the line that produced Catherine Parr thewife of K ing Henry VIII. (She out lived him!) The second son was HenryGreene, born about 1343 and di ed in 1399, who married Lady Matilda de Maudine. This is the line of the Gillingham Greens, and Surgeon John Greene, andprobably most of the G reens in America. Very little is known about the other 2 sons, Richard born about 1345 and Nicholas born about 1358. The twodaughters were Amabill a Greene born about 1341 who married Lord Ralph Raynes of Clifton, and Margaret Greene who married Lord de la Zouche. This is a very famous name and these daughters inherited much of the estates of theirbrothers after their de ath, so a serious study of the many estates of theeldest Sir Henry Greene could turn up a lo t of usefull data, but I have not had the time to do so.
