Note Adalbert, Italian ADALBERTO (d. c. 966), Lombard king of Italy who sharedthe throne for 11 years with his father, Berengar II, and afterBerengar's exile continued his father's struggle against the German kingand Holy Roman emperor Otto I. Adalbert joined his father in 946-947 in fighting the co-kings of Italy,Hugh of Provence and his son Lothair. After Lothair's death in 950,Adalbert was crowned with Berengar at Pavia. When Lothair's widow,Adelaide, refused to marry Adalbert and Berengar imprisoned her, Otto Imarched into Italy in 951 to rescue and marry her. After Otto's return toGermany, Berengar and Adalbert resumed the throne and in August 952 sworehomage to Otto. In 956 Otto sent his son Liudolf against Berengar and Adalbert, but, whenLiudolf died of malaria after a temporary victory, the co-kings continuedto rule. When Otto again invaded Italy and was crowned emperor (962) bythe pope, Adalbert fled to Provence. Returning to Italy in the autumn of 963, Adalbert was summoned to Rome byPope John XII, who had quarreled with Otto and now offered his support toAdalbert. Adalbert and the pope fled when Otto marched on Rome,installing a new pope, Leo VIII. With Otto back in Germany, Adalbertassumed the throne again. In 965 an army sent by Otto drove Adalbert fromPavia; the following autumn Otto inflicted a final crushing defeat on himand his supporters. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97]2

Note* MARGARET OF SCOTLAND, SAINT (b. c. 1045, probably Hungary--d. Nov. 16,1093, Edinburgh; canonized 1250; feast day November 16, Scottish feastday June 16), queen consort of Malcolm III Canmore and patroness ofScotland. Margaret was brought up at the Hungarian court, where her father, Edward,was in exile. After the Battle of Hastings, Edward's widow and childrenfled for safety to Scotland. Her brother Edgar the Aetheling, defeatedclaimant to the English throne, joined her there. In spite of herleanings toward a religious life, Margaret married (c. 1070) Malcolm IIICanmore, king of Scotland from 1057 or 1058 to 1093. Through herinfluence over her husband and his court, she promoted, in conformitywith the Gregorian reform, the interests of the church and of the Englishpopulation conquered by the Scots in the previous century. She diedshortly after her husband was slain near Alnwick, Northumberland.[Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97]1
