Note* Odin, also called WODAN, WODEN, or WOTAN, one of the principal gods inNorse mythology. His exact nature and role, however, are difficult todetermine because of the complex picture of him given by the wealth ofarchaeological and literary sources. The Roman historian Tacitus statedthat the Teutons worshiped Mercury; and because dies Mercurii ('Mercury'sday') was identified with Wednesday ('Woden's day'), there is littledoubt that the god Woden (the earlier form of Odin) was meant. ThoughWoden was worshiped preeminently, there is not sufficient evidence of hiscult to show whether it was practiced by all the Teutonic tribes or toenable conclusions to be drawn about the nature of the god. Laterliterary sources, however, indicate that at the end of the pre-Christianperiod Odin was the principal god in Scandinavia. From earliest times Odin was a war god, and he appeared in heroicliterature as the protector of heroes; fallen warriors joined him inValhalla. The wolf and the raven were dedicated to him. His magicalhorse, Sleipnir, had eight legs, teeth inscribed with runes, and theability to gallop through the air and over the sea. Odin was the greatmagician among the gods and was associated with runes. He was also thegod of poets. In outward appearance he was a tall, old man, with flowingbeard and only one eye (the other he gave in exchange for wisdom). He wasusually depicted wearing a cloak and a wide-brimmed hat and carrying aspear. Note Malcolm I, also called MALCOLM MACDONALD (d. 954), king of the Picts andScots (Alba). Malcolm succeeded to the crown when his cousin ConstantineII entered a monastery (943). He annexed Moray to the kingdom for thefirst time. After driving the Danes from York, the English king Edmundturned Cumbria over to Malcolm, apparently as a fief or seal of alliance.Later, when Norsemen again invaded the land, the Scots sent raids againstthe English, and in 954 the West Saxon king Eadred reunited the northerncounties to his dominions. Note* Hengest, co-leader of the Saxon (an inclusive term for Angles, Saxons,Jutes and Frisians) forces said by Geoffrey of Monmouth to haveoriginally been imported into Britain as mercenaries by Vortigern. Inreturn for land to raise their families, the Saxon troops were to protectthe land from invasion by the northern Picts and Scots. Instead, theSaxons got greedy and broke out of their enclaves, wreaking death anddestruction upon the defenseless Britons, until rescued from total ruinby Ambrosius Aurelianus, who, according to Gildas, stemmed the Saxon tidefor a time. Hengest (also spelled Hengist), probably a Jute, from Denmark, is said bythe 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (ASC)' to be the son of Wihtgils in a directline from the god, Woden; the brother of Horsa and the father of Octhaand Aesc. He is regarded by most, but not all, scholars as a genuinehistorical character. Some additional support for Hengest's historicityis to be found in a document called the 'Finnesburh Fragment,' part of anow-lost heroic poem, which mentions him: . . .Then the stout warriors, Sigeferth and Eaha, went to one door andunsheathed their swords; Ordlaf and Guthlaf went to guard the other, andHengest himself followed in their footsteps. . . The fragment tells the story of a band of warriors who accompany theDanish prince, Hnaef, on a visit to his sister, Hildeburh, who is marriedto a man named Finn, the ruler of the Frisians. In a nighttime surpriseattack, Finn's men kill Hnaef along with Hildeburh's sons (Hnaef'snephews) and overcome the other Danish warriors. The epic poem, 'Beowulf,' in a digression from the main tale, containsmore information about this event and from it we learn that, afterHnaef's death, Hengest assumed leadership of the Danes and became theservant of Finn, until he could take his revenge, the following spring. The ASC has Hengest arriving in Britain in 449 and places his death inthe year 4881
