William and Susan took donation land claim 731 in the Molalla area and it is still owned by a descendant: Champ Vaughan 14900 S. Macksburg Road Molalla, OR 97038-9440 (503) 829-4216
William came west in 1843 on the 1st major wagon train to Oregon. His father (James) had refused William to attend Westpoint; hence William's journey away from home to Oregon. He left his father's homeplace on April 20, 1843 and began to head west. William was a member of the Oregon Mounted Rifleman during the Cayuse War.
A stern Baptist (at one time Church Clerk in Molalla). Politcally a Democrat; several times nominated for both the Legislature and the Senate. Known in the Molalla area as 'Uncle Billy'. An avid hunter and always kept hunting dogs. He and his wife Susan Mary Officer lived in their original donation claim cabin util 1883 when they built the Vaughan house currently owned by Champ Vaughan (see above). This home was constructed from materials directly from the donation claim. A portable saw mill cut all the lumber used in the construction and the foundation and paving stones were from the Molalla River which borders the property. All store bought materials for the new house were bartered for. William's donation claim was the first permanent claim in the Molalla area; he also was the first pioneer to bring a wagon over the Oregon City Bluffs. Born, raised and married to Nancy in Virginia. Privided a substitue for the War of 1812; hence served in no war. In 1810 moved to Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. There he bought several hundred acres of land on Bushnell Creek where Stone's River divides into west and west forks. In Murfreesboro James and son-inlaw, Rueben Bolles bought a brick store building on the northeast corner on the square and opperated a mercantile known as :Bolles & Vaughan.' James also in Tennessee kept a hotel for some time where he bordered represenatives to the legislature when Murfreesboro was the capital of the state. He also followed farming and supervised the building of several turnpikes which entered Murfreesboro. James was a Presbyterian. He served for several years as constable. In 1839 in disolved his partershi and sold his interest in the town property and farm land. In 1842 he came by ox team and one horse carriage to Christian County, Missouri about 5 miles soth of Ozark, then in Taney County (where Selmore is now) where he improved one of the finest farms in that section. Land purchased by James in now Christian County was T. 26 N., R. 20 W., SWcr 1/4 Sec 7. Assignee of James J. Bird assignee of Robert A.Forbes, on 23 Feb 1850 Militery Bounty Land Warrent #44492 for 138.64 acres in 1851, also NW 1/4 NE 1/4 ec. 18 in 1851 and W 1/2 lot 2 NE T 26 N., R 21 W., fr 1/4 sec. 1.

    A common tradition among Maupin descendants says Gabriel Maupain, a large land owner, was a Huguenot general who left France because of religious persecution (Genealogies of Virginia Families, 3:685). He married Mary Spencer, a daughter of the Earl of Spencer. They stayed with the Earl when they left France, during which time Daniel was born in 1700. They immigrated to Virginia that same year and settled in Williamsburg (Genealogies of Virginia Families, 4:305).

    There is reason to doubt Mary was the Earl of Spencer's daughter and reason to doubt our ancestor was a general. Shaffett's research "proves" Gabriel Maupin, son of Amos de Maupin, was born in Jargeau (near Orleans), France, in 1666, and that he married Marie Hersent, daughter of Louis Hersent and Marie Pillion.

    Apparently the Hersents and Maupins moved to Holland to escape religious persecution in France, because it was in the Walloon Church, Amsterdam, Holland, that Marie Hersent and Gabriel Maupin were married on August 18, 1691. He was a tailor by trade in Holland.

    Several of their children were born in Holland, and a complete list of them includes Magdelaine, Claude, Mary, Sara Caterine, Daniel, and Gabriel.

    Then in 1700, Gabriel, Marie, and three of their children embarked on the Nassau and came to Virginia (Huguenot Emigration to Virginia listed Gabriel Maupain, sa femme and 3 enfans (page 29), as passengers). The journey lasted about three months, which was normal for that time, and arrived in Virginia on March 5, 1701 (Complete Book of Emigrants, 1700-1750, page 14).

    The Maupins settled in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he was an innkeeper.

    Gabriel Maupin became a naturalized British subject on April 18, 1705, by act of the Virginia General Assembly (Tidewater Virginia Families, 286).

    Gabriel Maupin's will, dated September 2, 1719, with a codicil dated December 1, 1719, was proven in General Court on April 20, 1720, Williamsburg, Virginia. Mary, his wife, was the executrix (Genealogies of Virginia Families, 4:305).

    Daniel Maupin, probably Gabriel's son, was granted 1,188 acres in Albemarle Co. on Sept 20, 1745.
