| Note* | [Anderson,Richard.FTW] [Anderson.FTW] Subj: C L GORHAM LETTER 1848 Date: 97-01-20 20:51:03 EST From: monyah@@conterra.com (Monya Havekost) To: PatAnder73@@aol.com [envelope] 10 Hamilton Ga Dec 12 [written by postmaster handwriting different than letter] Mr. William T. O. Harris Camargo Monroe County Mississippi Hamilton Georgia. December 4th 1848 Dear Cousin William, Your of the 16 of Nov is now lying before me, which informs me that you have not received a letter from me, since Dec the 20, 1847. This is very strange indeed. I received a letter from you seven month's ago, which I answered immediately after receiving it. You stated in that letter, that you were very much emaciated by a long and serous spell of sickness. I have since been informed by Cousin Thomas Anderson, who recently returned from Mississippi, that you are very much reduced but likely to be restored to health again. Presuming on the friendship you have long since honored me with, the remembrance of which, I shall ever cherish, with the most lively and real sentiments of gratitude; I beg leave to introduce to your attention a subject of great importance, with tender anxiety and growing solicitude for your spiritual welfare. I improve a few hasty moments in writing to you, imploring the hold spirit to guide my pen to a word in season, and impress on your heart and conscience the great truths I suggest. The idea that I am addressing an immortal being, fills my soul with holy dread, and urges - irresistibly urges me to plainess and faithfulness. Dear Cousin: it is well for us to consider our awful state by nature, and our exposedness to the wrath of an angry God. We stand on the verge of a long eternity, and while out of Christ, we totter on a precipice from whence we may tremendously fall into the gulf of remediless perdition and dispair. A few more short days and we ill cease to be interested in all that is done on earth. Ah Cousin William - this night our soul's may be required of us; and then our eternal destiny will be fixed beyond the possibility of a change. O; that we could justly concieve the awful solemnities of a dying hour, and the amazing realities of a future world. O, that it might be impress upon us the worth of our souls, and the importance of securing its salvation, let us not defer one moment longer, if we halve the happiness of Heaven, a happiness that shall survive the ruins of the world, and florish immortal in the celestial Paradise of this is valuable, let us strive to obtain an unattenable title to it. How vain, how transitory, are all the enjoyments of time and sense. They can never satisfy the desires of our immortal minds. Real felicity they cannot impart. Let us then look upon them with a noble indiffrence as they must one day appear, unworthy the attention of immortal beings. The poet says very truly Beware what earth calls happiness; beware.) All joys, but joys, that never can expire. I leave the subject with you. God grant we may not decieve ourselves; but be advocated for his holy religion untill our latest breath. May heaven bless you temporally, and spiritually in the prayer of your friend and cousin. C. L. G. Last August we had a revival of Religion among us, curing our meeting Sister Sarah made a profession, and became a member in full fellowship with us. denouncing sin and satan, and enlisted under the banner of the Prince of Pease, and engaged in a war against three potent enemies, the world, the flesh, and the 'Uncle Sam,' that is to say the bad boy. Cousin William I venture to say, No lover of mountain scenery ever entered the quiet villige of H___[Hamilton] without pausing to comtemplate its beauties. The views in the vicinity are picturesque. The cool breezes which prevail in the vicinity, and elevating scenery around, renders the place peculiarly delightful to the traveler. This you can attest to for you have seen our villige of grandent and beauty and with all spent some very pleasant moments here-among the gay, young, and beautiful. But beauty soon fades. I recollect when first I saw this expression. I looked at it attentively, and turning an eye around, and comtemplating the world, true indeed thought I, 'Beauty soon fades' I have seen the blushing rose unfolding its tender leaves to meet the warm gaze of the morning sun, and have almost envied in my volatile gaiety the beauty and innocence of the flower. But when at evening I pause to give a passing look at the flower it was faded. This prove to me 'Beauty soon fades' It is vain to hope in this world that the things now bright and beautiful should be so long. No far from it; the brightest seems to be the first to droop and fade away. There is a tendency to decay in every thing that is earthly. Nature is continually suffering change by her own phenomena, or yielding her own beauties to the deforming hand of art. Yet I love the scenes of decay. They give a melancholy pleasure far sweeter than much of the gay frivolity of life- I would rather gaze upon the tree or shrub that with keen sensibility cast of [off] its robe with the first wintry blast of October than upon the evergreen that resists the soberest touch of Boreas -/ 'Beauty soon fades' and there is nothing beautiful that we may love - with the hope of its continuing so - I have described to you the place of my nativity yet I cannot love mountain scenery with the hope of its continuing so. 'The mountain is sinking to a level with the valley and the waves of the Ocean are rolling over what was once habitable land.' Still I love the scenes of decay - Autumn has a transition and contrast of beauties and pleasure which makes one love it. When the sharp frosty wind from the north or the chill damp breeze from the south west forbids the contemplative to walk abroad in the evening they give a new and active buoyancy to the hilarity within doors - and make the fire side the focus of a thousand charms. And now 'when Autum's breath has tinged the grove with red and strewed the vale with yellow - And nature looking round her binds the green robe that bound her; -' I will now make an effort to give you the general news of our villa. There has been several marriages in H____ since I had the pleasure of writing to you. I will mention them. Miss Handson to Mr. Pitts, Miss Howard to Mr. Howard a cousin of hers-Sqr Ingram to Miss Jarratt - Mr. A. F. Johnston to Miss Mary Bedell - Mr Bartlet to Miss Stone - Mr. Crook to Miss Taylor - Mr. Layneer to Miss Golightly - Dr. Ridley to Miss Stamps - Mr. Seats to Miss Armstrong - Old Capt Dendy to the Widow Coplin Mr. Henry Scott to Miss Troy. I will now mention the deaths - Mrs. Dendy Mis Turnner Mr. John Scott and Mr. Harris. Miss Samantha Dendy is not married. She still lives in H. She very inquires after you. Sister Sarah has been going to school ever since I saw you. She is called the most inteligent lady in Hamilton. The gentlemen in H calls her the morning rose - I assure you Cousin Wm she is very beautiful and also interlectual - and has a greate many Beaus. Susan and Honey are also going to school - Susan is also pretty and growing intelligent every day. H__ey[hole] is tolably passible. Sister Mitchell is on a visit here. She says she would be very happy to see you and also to hear from you. She will live either in Atlanta or Marietta next year. She will remain here untill the Spring. Mr. Mitchell is at this time in Atlanta. Mother desires to be remember to you. She says tell your Mother when you write to her that she would be glad to here from her and family. Cousin William I have not heard from Upson since I heard from Cousin Thom Anderson. He said our relations in Upson were well except Cousin Eliza who was at the time he wrote lying very low. Brother George is living in Burk County. The rest of my Brothers and Sisters are with us - and enjoying fine Health. I wish you to continuer your Correspondence Good evening dear friend and Cousin C.
