| Note | Alfonso VIII, byname EL DE LAS NAVAS (Spanish: He of Las Navas) (b.1155--d. Oct. 6, 1214, Burgos, Castile), king of Castile from 1158, sonof Sancho III, whom he succeeded when three years old, and grandson ofAlphonso VII, is a great name in Spanish history, for he led thecoalition of Christian princes and foreign crusaders which broke thepower of the Almohades at the battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212. Hispersonal history is that of many mediaeval kings. He succeeded to thethrone on the death of his father, Sancho, at the age of a year and ahalf. Before Alfonso came of age his reign was troubled by internalstrife and the intervention of the kingdom of Navarre in Castilianaffairs. Though proclaimed king, he was regarded as a mere name by theunruly nobles to whom a minority was convenient. The devotion of a squireof his household, who carried him on the pommel of his saddle to thestronghold of San Esteban de Gormaz, saved him from falling into thehands of the contending factions of Castro and Lara, or of his uncle,Ferdinand of Leon, who claimed the regency. The loyalty of the town ofAvila protected his youth. He was barely 15 when he came forth to do aman's work by restoring his kingdom to order. Throughout his reign hemaintained a close alliance with the kingdom of Aragon, and in 1179 heconcluded the Pact of Cazorla, which settled the future line ofdemarcation between Castile and Aragon when the reconquest of MoorishSpain was completed. From 1172 to 1212 he was engaged in resistance tothe Moorish Almohad invaders, who defeated him in 1195. In the same yearthe kings of Leon and Navarre invaded Castile, but Alfonso defeated themwith the aid of King Peter II of Aragon. It was only by a surprise thathe recovered the capital, Toledo, from the hands of the Laras. In 1212Alfonso secured a great victory at Las Navas de Tolosa over the Almohadsultan and thereby broke Almohad power in Spain. His marriage withLeonora of Aquitaine, daughter of Henry II of England, brought him underthe influence of the greatest governing intellect of his time. AlphonsoVIII was the founder of the first Spanish university, the 'studiumgenerale' of Palencia, which, however, did not survive him.[Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1961 ed., Vol. 1, p. 687-8, ALPHONSO VIII;Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97] Alfonso VIII, byname EL DE LAS NAVAS (Spanish: He of Las Navas) (b.1155--d. She was also Comtess de Poitou, Saintonge, Angoumois, Limosin, Auvergne, Bordeaux et Agen. She encouraged and abetted a revolt by Henry's three eldest legitimate sons, Richard, Gregory and John against their father. For this she was imprisoned for nearly 15 years, and released upon his death. During Richard I's frquent absence from the kingdom, she administered the affairs of the realm. After Richard died, she continued to exert influence and remained active in ploitical affairs when John I became king. -Charlotte's Web Geneology http://www.charweb.org/gen/rjones/d0104/g0000082.htm#I987 | |

| Father-Bio* | 1618 | Richard Anderson |
| Father-Bio | 1618 | Richard Anderson2 |
| Note* | [Anderson,Richard.FTW] [Anderson.FTW] If the family tradition of 'Ye Andersons of Virginia', pages 231- 288, Volume 11, Old Northwest Geanealogical Quarterly, Columbus, Ohio, 1908; are correct, Robert's father may be the Richard Anderson, mentioned in early (1630's) York County, Viriginia Court Records. Other sources give his father as John. Samuel Davies of Hanover County wrote that on 02/14/1754 in conversation with Adam Anderson in London, Adam said 'his uncle was the grandfather of the Andersons in Hanover Co., Virginia.' Adam Anderson was a clerk in the South Sea Trading House of London, and a member of a society for the propagation of Christianity in the colonies. Samuel Davies is noteworthy as the champion of the appointment of George Washington as CiC. Problem with this idea is that the early Andersons were in VA much to early to be uncles of Adam, but much gets lost in the relating of stories. However Samuel Davies grandfather was Moses Davies who was a neighbor of Robert Anderson in the 1660's These names are very speculative and there are some conflicts between several authors'publications. The first hard data begins with Robert. According to William Pope Anderson writing in 1936 Robert apparently came to what is now Hanover county between 1670 and 1677 as one of 80 persons transported to Virginia by charter to George Chapman by William Berkeley, Governor. However there is a patent record that shows he was a landholder by 1666 and it is possible that he had been born in Virginia. Tradition holds that he was the son of Richard Anderson of York County. In 1677 Robert Anderson signed the petition of grievances for Blisland Parish regarding Gov. Berkley. He was a vestry man of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County on 11/1686; and for St. Paul's Parish from 1704-1712. From the Virginia land patents 1666 adj. Moyses Davies at Tottopottomoyes Creek 1670 adj. John Fleming & Thomas Glass George Chapman 04/22/1670 4150 acres New Kent County Pamunkey Neck, etc. for the transport of Robert Anderson Robert Anderson 04/16/1683 727 acres New Kent County Patent Book 7 page 272 N of Chickahominy Swamp in the head of Holly Bush Branch adj. Thomas Glass, to mouth of Meyry Branch. For the importation of 15 persons 1683 adj. Moses Davies at Chickahominy Maine Swamp 1703 adj. George Aalvis at Totapotomy's Creek The county he resided in changed considerably because of revised boundaries. 1683-1691 New Kent County 1691-1702 King and Queen 1702- King William Bibliography 'Ye Andersons of Virginia', pages 231-288, Volume 11, Old Northwest Geanealogical Quarterly, Columbus, Ohio, 1908 Anderson Family Records by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnatti, Ohio, 1936. Anderson Climbing the Family Tree by Bessie Lamar Anderson Calvert Commentary on Sources William Pope Anderson in Anderson Family Records 1936, The Early Descendants of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters of Virginia, and Allied Families, 1938 and Anderson - Overton 1945 documents the descendats of Robert Anderson of New Kent County. His interest lies with the family of Robert Clough Anderson of some historical fame. Robert C. served with Washington's Army (infamous at the battle of Trenton) and had a son who commanded Fort Sumter at the outbreak of the Civil War. A notation in the latter volume states that copies may be obtained from 'Charitable Relief Association', 203 West Third Street, Cincinnati 2, Ohio. Both the Virginia and Tennessee Libraries have had these books, though not all three. Edward L. Anderson wrote The Andersons of Goldmine, which is in the Library of Congress. It contains a family tree for the Robert Anderson family of New Kent. Climbing the Family Tree by Bessie Lamar Anderson Calvert is an additional source for this family. It contains considerable detail, particularily regarding the female descendants of the families. However, some of its data is questionable. I found this in the Tennessee State Library and the Library of Congress.
