Simon I de St Liz , 1st Earl of Huntingdon1,2 (M) Pedigree | ||
| Father-Bio* | c 1030 | Ranulf 'the Rich' (?)2 |
| Note | After the execution of Waltheof, Earl of Huntingdon, King William offeredJudith, his niece, the deceased earl's widow, in marriage to Simon St.Liz, a noble Norman, but the lady peremptorily rejected the alliance,owing, Dugdale says, to St. Liz's halting in one leg, which refusal sodispleased the Conqueror that he immediately seized upon the castle andhonour of Huntingdon, which the countess held in dower, exposing herselfand her dau. to a state of privation and obscurity in the Isle of Ely andother places, while he bestowed upon the said Simon St. Liz the town ofNorthampton and the whole hundred of Falkeley, then valued at £40 perannum, to provide shoes for his horses. St. Liz thus disappointed inobtaining the hand of the Countess of Huntingdon, made his addresses withgreater success to her elder dau., the Lady Maud, who became his wife,when William conferred upon the said Simon de St. Liz, the Earldoms ofHuntingdon and Northampton. This nobleman built the castle ofNorthampton as also the priory of St. Andrews there about the 18th yearof the Conqueror's reign, and was a liberal benefactor to the church.His lordship was witness to King Henry I's laws in 1100, after which hemade a voyage to the Holy Land and d. on his return (1115), at the abbeyof Charity, in France, leaving issue, Simon, Waltheof, and Maud. Upon the death of Simon de St. Liz, Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton,his elder son, Simon, should have succeeded to both dignities, but itappears he only inherited the former. The Earldom of Huntingdon beingassumed by David, son of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, who had m. thedeceased earl's widow, the Countess Maud, under the especial sanction ofKing Henry I. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited, andExtinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 468, St. Liz,Earls of Huntingdon]2 | |

| Note | on the history of the Earldom of Huntingdon: His [Waltheof's] son-in-law Simon de St Liz was the next holder of theEarldom [of Huntingdon], the family connections of Simon's wife Maudmaking the transition a natural one under the terms prevailing then.Indeed the history of the Earldom over the next few decades amplyillustrates the almost chattel-like nature of such a title at this time,a quasi-hereditary post which was nevertheless as often as not held fromthe king at pleasure and which could be transferred between members ofthe same family like a parcel of land. [Burke's Peerage] ------------------------ EARLDOM OF NORTHAMPTON (II, 1) EARLDOM OF HUNTINGDON (II) SIMON DE ST. LIZ, said to be a son of Ranulph the Rich, a Norman, appearsto have come to England early in the reign of William II. Presumably inconsequence of his mariiage, he became EARL of HUNTINGDON and NORTHAMPTONafter 1086 (for he is not named in Domesday Book) and in or before 1090,when he witnessed a charter to Bath Abbey as 'Earl Simon.' He witnessedanother royal charter under the same designation a little later. Hefought for William in Normandy in 1098, and was taken prisoner by Louis,son of the French King. On the accession of Henry I in 1100 he witnessedthe charter of liberties issued by the King at his Coronation. He builtthe Castle of Northampton and founded or refounded the Priory of St.Andrew in that town, and made it dependent on the Cluniac house of LaCharité-sur-Loire; this was probably in the time of William Rufus, butcertainly before 1108, when he granted an ample charter to it inconjunction with Maud his wife. He was a benefactor also to DaventryPriory, and probably built St. Sepulchre's, Northampton, about this time.He went to Jerusalem cruce signatus, and returned safely, but setting outagain he died on the way at the abovenamed Priory of La Charité, and wasburied there. He married, perhaps as early as 1090 when she would be aged about 18,Maud, eldest daughter of Waltheof, EARL OF HUNTINGDON and NORTHAMPTON, byJudith, niece of William I. He died, as aforesaid, at La Charitépresumably in 1111 or shortly afterwards. His widow married DAVID I ofScotland. | Note | Aquitaine, the région encompassing the départements of Dordogne,Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques in southwesternFrance. The name Aquitaine is probably a form of Auscetani, which in turnis a lengthened form of Ausces and is thus cognate with the words Basqueand Wasconia (Gascony). The capital is Bordeaux. In Julius Caesar's description of Gaul, 'Aquitania' was an area extendingfrom the Pyrenees to the Garonne River. The Roman emperor Augustus(reigned 27 BC-AD 14) made it a Roman administrative district, and itsborders were extended as far north as the Loire River and east to theMassif Central. A Visigothic province in the 5th century, Aquitaine came under Frankishrule in the 6th century, retaining a measure of provincial identityexploited by local rulers. Long resistant in the 8th century, it wasfinally subdued by Charlemagne, who bestowed it (less Gascony) as akingdom upon his son Louis (the future emperor Louis I). It remained akingdom under Louis's son Pepin I and the latter's son Pepin II, itschief towns being Toulouse, Limoges, and Poitiers. Devastation by theNormans in the 9th century resulted in political and social upheavalsduring the course of which various feudal domains were established. Alittle before 845, the title Duke of Aquitaine, was revived, and in 893King Charles III ordered that Count Rainulf II, who then held Aquitaine,should be poisoned, after which the King bestowed the duchy upon Williamthe Pious, Count of Auvergne, founder of the Abbey of Cluny. He wassucceeded by his nephew, Count William II, in 918, and there followed along line of dukes. In the first half of the 10th century the counts of Auvergne, ofToulouse, and of Poitiers each claimed this ducal title, but it waseventually secured by William I, count of Poitiers (William III ofAquitaine). The powerful house of the counts of Poitiers retainedAquitaine during the 10th and 11th centuries. William IV fought againstHugh Capet, King of France; William VI added Cascony; and William IXbecame famous as a crusader and troubadour. Then, on the death withoutheirs of the last duke, William X (William VIII of Poitiers), in 1137,his daughter Eleanor united Aquitaine to the kingdom of France by hermarriage with Louis VII. When Louis divorced her, however, Eleanor ofAquitaine married in 1152 the count of Anjou, Henry Plantagenet, who twoyears later became king of England as Henry II. The duchy thus passed toher new husband, who, having suppressed a revolt there, gave it to hisson, Richard the Lion-Heart (later Richard I of England), who spent mostof his life in Aquitaine, often subduing rebellious vassals. When Richarddied in 1199, the duchy reverted to Eleanor, and, on her death five yearslater, it was united to the English crown and henceforward followed thefortunes of the English possessions in France. Aquitaine, as it came to the English kings, stretched as of old from theLoire to the Pyrenees, but its extent was curtailed on the southeast bythe wide lands of the counts of Toulouse. The name Guyenne (or Guienne),a corruption of Aquitaine, seems to have come into use about the 10thcentury, and the subsequent history of Aquitaine is merged in that ofGascony and Guyenne, which were completely reunited to France by the endof the Hundred Years' War.
