Note Waccho (d. c. 539), king of the Lombards in the period preceding theinvasion of Italy, when they occupied territory roughly coinciding withAustria north of the Danube. Waccho assassinated his uncle Tato andusurped the throne c. 510, ruling for 30 years. Tato's son and grandson took refuge with the king of a neighbouringpeople, the Gepidae, making several fruitless attempts to recover ruleover the Lombards. Shortly after 536 Waccho made a treaty with theByzantine emperor Justinian I against the Gepidae. In 539 the Ostrogothking of Italy, Witigis, hard-pressed by Justinian's general Belisarius,sent ambassadors to Waccho, offering him money in exchange for militaryaid. Waccho refused, preferring to remain on good terms withConstantinople. Married successively to daughters of the kings of theThuringians, of the Gepidae, and of the Heruli, Waccho was succeeded by ayoung son who died during the regency of the Lombard chief Audoin; thisregent's son Alboin became the king who destroyed the Gepidae and invadedItaly. Note Peter II, king of Aragon (1174-1213), son of Alphonso II., and Sancia,daughter of Alphonso VIII. of Castile, had a very marked and curiouspersonal character. As a Spanish prince, he was a crusader, and took adistinguished part in the victory over the Almohades at the Navas deTolosa in 1212. His lands to the north of the Pyrenees brought him intouch with the Albigenses and in 1213 he fought against Simon deMontfort's crusaders, moved not by sympathy with the Albigenses, but byhostility to the conquering intervention of the north under pretence ofreligious zeal. A favourer of the troubadours, he combined great personalvalour with the most lax morality. He was killed at the battle of Muret(Sept. 12, 1213). Note* Led into ruinous alliance with Castile at the urging of his mother, his borrowings to cover various military adventures left his realm in dire financial straights. He was killed in a battle fighting French Knights led by the first Baron Simon de Montford (who earlier had been an ally).
