Note* Supposedly he was from Maer,Norway, but this is unproven, as well as the parental links. He was known in the north as Hrolf the Ganger, because he was so huge that no horse could carry him and he must follow gang afoot. A pirate at home, he was driven into exile by the anger of King Harold, whereupon he followed his trade in the Western Isles and in Gaul, and rose to be a great Jarl among his people. Originally a part of Charlemagne's empire, Normandy was fairly wealthy, with lots of monasteries and small towns. Lying on the northern coast of France, it became a favorite and easy target for Vikings in the 9th C. It lost most of its monasteries and was not much of a prize when a Viking came to the King Charles III 'the simple' of the West Franks in 911 with a proposal. The Viking was Rolf (claimed by Norway, Denmark and Sweden, but probably from Norway) with many men at his command. He offered to defend the coast against other Vikings in return for a title. And, naturally, he and his people would convert to Christianity. So, Rolf the Viking became Count of Normandy (later the Duchy of Normandy), and the King of the West Franks breathed a deep sigh of relief. The title 'Duke of Normandy', by the way, seems never to have been used before the end of the 10th century, and to have been official only with the accession of William II (the Conqueror). The title granted by Charles the Simple was Count, usually taken to mean of Rouen.
The territory given to Rollo comprised the town of Rouen and a few 'pagi' situated on the sea-coast was ceded to the latter; but the terms of the treaty are ill-defined, and it is consequently almost impossible to find out the exact extent of this territory or to know whether Brittany was at this time made a feudal dependency of Normandy.

Note Charles I (b. 953--d. May 21, 992?, Orléans, Fr.), duke of LowerLorraine, head of the only surviving legitimate line of the Carolingiandynasty by 987, and an unsuccessful claimant for the French throne. Son of Louis IV of France, Charles was banished by his brother, KingLothair, in 977. Receiving the duchy of Lower Lorraine from Otto II ofGermany in the same year, he conspired unsuccessfully with Otto todethrone Lothair but then reversed his policy, made peace with Lothair,and plotted against the new German king, Otto III. After the deaths ofLothair (986) and Lothair's son and successor Louis V (987), Charlesasserted his claim to the French throne. But Adalbero, archbishop ofReims, convinced the assembly of Frankish nobles that the Frankish crownwas elective rather than hereditary and that Charles was unworthy of thekingship. The assembly then proclaimed Hugh Capet king of France. Charles did not abandon his claim but, in 991, was seized and handed overto Hugh, who kept him in prison until his death. One son, Otto, succeededhim as duke of Lower Lorraine, dying about 1012; two other sons diedobscurely. With them the legitimate male line of the Carolingians came toan end. Oct. 7, 929, Péronne, Fr.), king of France (893-922),whose authority came to be accepted by Lorraine and who settled theNorthmen in Normandy but who became the first Carolingian ruler of thewestern kingdom to lose his crown. The posthumous son of Louis II the Stammerer and of his second wifeAdelaide, Charles was too young to assume the throne on the death of hishalf-brother, Carloman, in 884 [he renounced his rights after the civilwar in 897], or that of his cousin, Charles the Fat, in 888. Charles wascrowned at Reims by Archbishop Fulk on Jan. 28, 893. During the reign ofOdo, who had succeeded Charles, he gained the recognition of a certainnumber of nobles and he got some support from the emperor Arnulf; and Odoceded part of Neustria to him. When Odo died (Jan. 1, 898), Charlesobtained possession of the whole kingdom. Charles was strongly under the influence of Robert, brother of the deadEudes. It was Robert's victory against the Northmen at Chartres in 911which paved the way for the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911, bywhich Charles ceded territory in the area later known as Normandy, to theViking leader Rollo and his men; in return, Rollo became a Christian andCharles's vassal. The Normans who had such an impact on Europe in the11th and 12th centuries were the final product of this settlement. Thestory of the marriage of their chief Rollo with the king's sister,Gisela, related by the chronicler Dudo of Saint Quentin, is verydoubtful. The same year Charles, on the invitation of the barons, took possessionof the kingdom of Lotharingia, but the Neustrian barons, jealous of thegrowth of the royal authority and discontented with the favour shown bythe king to his counsellor Hagano, rebelled and in 922 elected Robert,brother of King Odo, in place of Charles. Robert was killed in thebattle of Soissons (923), but the victory remained with his party, whoelected Rudolph, duke of Burgundy, king. In his extremity Charlestrusted himself to Herbert, count of Vermandois, who deceived him andimprisoned him at Château-Thierry and afterward at Péronne, where he diedon Oct. 7, 929.
