Walter Giffard, 2nd Earl of Buckingham, adhered faithfully to King HenryI and distinguished himself in that monarch's cause at the battle ofBreneville in 1119 against the French, commanded by their king in person,where Henry obtained a victory. His lordship, during this reign, foundedthe Abbey of Nutley, co. Bucks. He d. in 1164, without issue, when thelands of his barony came, according to Dugdale, to be shared amongst hisrelatives; 'for it seems,' (says the writer), 'in the 1st Richard I, thatRichard de Clare, Earl of Hertford, in respect of his descent fromRohaise, sister of the earl and wife of Richard Fitz-Gilbert, his linealancestor, and William Mareschall, Earl of Pembroke, in right of Isabel deClare, his wife, obtained a confirmation from that king of all the landsof this Walter, Earl of Buckingham, both in England and Normandy; ofwhich lands, Richard, Earl of Hertford, was to have the chief seat inEngland, and William, Earl of Pembroke, the chief seat in Normandy; theresidue in both countries to be equally divided between them.' Thusterminated the house of Giffard, Earls of Buckingham. The titles is saidby Camden to have been subsequently borne by Richard de Clare, surnamedStrongbow, Earl of Pembroke.
