From thissecond marriage, there was a daughter, Antonia, who married Pythodorus. They had a daughter, Pythodoris, who married (1) Archelaus of Cappadocia, and (2) Polemo I. From this marriage there were three children: AntoniaTryphaena; Zeno; and M. Antonius Polemo (?). Mark Antony married (3)Fulvia, widow of Clodius, and later widow of Crio. Mark Antony married(4) *Octavia the Elder, and finally, at the end of his career, in theautumn of 37 B.C. (5) Cleopatra VII., Queen of Egypt, previously married(1) Ptolemy XIII., who died in 47 B.C., and (2) Ptolemy XIV, who died in44 B.C. Mark Antony and Cleopatra both committed suicide, and he died in30 B.C. By Mark Antony, Cleopatra bore a daughter, Cleopatra of Cyrene(Selene), Queen of Cyrene, about 33-31 B.C., married Juba II. ofMauretania, son of Juba I. of Numidia, ruler of Armenia, Media, andParthia. Salene and Juba II. had a son, Ptolemy of Mauretania. GENERAL: notes or source: HBJ Encyclopedia Brittanica Defeated by his wife's brother, Augustus Caesar. Antony, Mark (Latin Marcus Antonius) (83?-30BC), Roman statesman andgeneral, who defeated the assassins of Julius Caesar and, with GaiusOctavius and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, formed the Second Triumvirate, which ultimately secured the end of the Roman Republic. Antony was born in Rome and educated for a short time in Greece. From 58to 56BC he served as a leader of cavalry in Roman campaigns in Palestineand Egypt, and from 54 to 50BC he served in Gaul under Julius Caesar.Subsequently, with Caesar's aid, he attained the offices of quaestor, augur, and tribune of the people. At the outbreak of the civil warbetween Caesar and the Roman soldier and statesman Pompey the Great,Antony was appointed Caesar's commander in chief in Italy. He commandedthe left wing of Caesar's army at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48BC, and in44BC he shared the consulship with Caesar. After the assassination of Caesar in 44BC, Antony's skillful oratory, immortalized by Shakespeare in the play Julius Caesar, turned the Romanpeople against the conspirators, leaving Antony for a time with almostabsolute power in Rome. A rival soon appeared, however, in the person ofGaius Octavius, later the Roman emperor Augustus, who was grandnephew ofCaesar and Caesar's designated heir. A struggle for power broke out whenAntony, Octavius, and a third contender for the throne, the Roman generalMarcus Aemilius Lepidus, formed the Second Triumvirate and agreed todivide the Roman Empire among themselves. In 42BC, at Philippi, the triumvirate crushed the forces led by twoassassins of Caesar, the Roman statesmen Marcus Junius Brutus and GaiusCassius Longinus, who sought to restore the Roman Republic. Later in thesame year, Antony summoned the Egyptian queen Cleopatra to attend him inthe city of Tarsus, in Cilicia (now in Turkey), and explain her refusalto aid the triumvirate in the civil war. Instead of punishing Cleopatra, however, Antony fell in love with her and returned with her to Egypt in41BC. In 40BC he attended meetings of the triumvirate in Italy, at whicha new division of the Roman world was arranged, with Antony receiving theeastern portion, from the Adriatic Sea to the Euphrates River; in thesame year he attempted to cement his relations with Octavius by marryingthe latter's sister Octavia. Nevertheless, Antony soon returned to Egyptand resumed his life with Cleopatra. Octavius made use of this fact toexcite the indignation of the Roman people against Antony. When, in 36BC,Antony was defeated in a military expedition against the Parthians, popular disapproval of his conduct deepened in Rome, and a new civil warbecame inevitable. In 31BC the forces of Antony and Cleopatra weredecisively defeated by those of Octavius in a naval engagement nearActium. The couple returned to Egypt, deserted by the Egyptian fleet andby most of Antony's own army. In the following year, besieged by thetroops of Octavius in Alexandria and deceived by a false report ofCleopatra's suicide, Antony killed himself by falling on his sword. When Caligula was murdered, in 41 A.D., thereremained this Claudius, his uncle, who was now 51 years of age but who,as the butt of the family, had been excluded from the functions of thegovernment, neglected, ill-treated, and allowed to divide his timebetween low company and literary studies. He was known as 'Claudius, theIdiot or the Stutterer.' No one had considered him a serious candidatesave the shrewd Herod Agrippa II., who, having successfully schemed forthe elevation of Caligula and reaped a rich reward, was silentlymeditating a second coup. Perhaps instead of being weak-minded, Claudiusmerely feigned madness in order to escape poisoning. On his father's sidehe was descended from Appius Claudius, a Roman decemivir in 450 B.C.,whose name survives in the Appian Way. Born in Lyons (Lugdunum), 10 B.C.,Claudius in 43 A.D. determined to carry out the conquest of Britain whichAugustus had meditated, but decided to postpone, if not to forego. Senecarecords with a sneer that Claudius 'had determined to see every German,Gaul , and Briton in a toga.' He sent Aulus Platius against Caractacus,in 43 A.D., and himself soon joined his victorious army in time to seethe crossing of the Thames and the fall of Colchester, Cymbeline'scapital, and to receive the 'submission of the eleven British kings.'These successes, gained only with the hardest fighting, led him to maketreaties with the British chiefs (See Wurts, pp. 155-156). After butsixteen days in the island he returned to celebrate his triumph, leavinghis generals to carry on. This was the most notable achievement of thereign of Claudius, who was also the builder of the conduit Aqua Claudiusand other public works. He married four times: (1) Plautia Urgulanilla, who died on her wedding day, (2) Aelia Paetina, whom he divorced, and (3)*Valeria Messalina, aged sixteen, an exceedingly wicked woman, mother oflittle Octavia, had the title of Augusta conferred upon her, whom he alsodivorced. Then at age forty-eight, he married (4) Agrippina the Younger, his niece, who was already twice a widow, daughter of Agrippina the Elderand Germanicus. Claudius conferred the title of Augusta upon her. By herfirst husband, Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, she had a son Nero. She wasalso married the second time to Caius Crispus. Her problem was to becomethe wife of Claudius, to get rid of his son, Britannicus, and make Nero,by adoption, heir to the Empire. The fact that she was Claudius' niecedid not deter her, but gave her opportunities for fond intimacies thatstirred the old ruler in no avuncular manner. She, at the age ofthirty-two, while Claudius was fifty-seven, became the 4th wife of heruncle. The Senate approved, the Praetorians laughed, and Agrippinareached the throne. Claudius, to whom she gave poison and caused hisdeath on October 13, 54 A.D. On that day her son, Nero, was proclaimedEmperor. BIOGRAPHY: Claudius I (10BC- AD54), Roman emperor (AD41-54). Claudius was born TIBERIUS CLAUDIUS DRUSUS NERO GERMANICUS in Lugdunum(present-day Lyon, France). His father, Nero Claudius Drusus, was ayounger brother of Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar, later the Roman emperorTiberius. Claudius held no important public office until the age of 47,when he became consul during the reign of his nephew, Emperor Caligula. When the latter was assassinated in AD41, Claudius was proclaimed emperorby the Praetorian Guard, who found him hiding in the palace. The firstacts of his reign gave promise of mild and just government; but in 42,when a conspiracy against his life was uncovered, he went intosemiretirement. His wife Messalina became largely responsible foradministering the government for a time. She practiced cruelties andextortions without restraint. Aside from the excesses perpetrated underthe influence of Messalina, Claudius's reign was that of an ableadministrator, both in civil and military affairs. Mauretania(present-day northern Morocco and western Algeria) was made a Romanprovince; the conquest of Britain was begun; and the Roman armies foughtsuccessfully against the Germans. Judea and Thrace also became Romanprovinces during his rule. Claudius expended enormous sums in building, especially in the construction of the famous Claudian Aqueduct. Hisadministration was characterized by a decline in the power of thenobility and by the practice, later commonplace, of grantingresponsibility and wealth to the personal followers of the emperor, including former slaves. In 48 Claudius ordered the execution of Messalina, who had indicated hercontempt for him by publicly staging a mock marriage with her lover. Hethen defied widespread disapproval by marrying his niece, Agrippina theYounger, under whose influence he deprived his son by Messalina,Britannicus, of his heritage, adopting instead Agrippina's son by aformer marriage, Nero, later emperor of Rome. Shortly thereafter Claudiuswas poisoned, presumably by Agrippina. Claudius is depicted by ancienthistorians as being neglected, sickly, and ridiculed before coming topower; his character during his reign is described as ignorant andmalicious. Modern scholars, however, tend to discount their testimony andestimate him as shrewd and able. BIOGRAPHY: 'Claudius I,' Microsoft€ Encarta€ Encyclopedia 2000. ©1993-1999 Microsoft Corporation. He was tribune in 91BC, and as spokesman for thearistocrats he attempted to restore to members of the Senate the right tosit as judices (jurors) in the law courts; this right had beentransferred to the equites (knights, actually the propertied group inRome) by the legislation of Gaius Sempronius Gracchus. In order toaccomplish this purpose, Drusus proposed to admit 300 of the equites tothe Senate, doubling the membership of that body; to grant the franchiseto non-Roman Italian allies; and to decrease the price of graindistributed to the people. These and other proposals were passed but weresubsequently declared invalid, because they had been enacted as a singlemeasure. Shortly after the rejection of his proposals, Drusus wasassassinated, and a rebellion of the Italian allies, called the SocialWar, broke out.
