Browne John Lane Jerapmel Bowers [Copy of a document in possession of Dr. John S. H. Fogg of South Boston] p.145 The locations of these garrisons can be fixed approximately by the known residences of the ho useholders belonging to them. 1. Those in John Moore's garrison lived on the Marlborough road in the southeast part of Bolt on, near the district now called Fryville. The graves of the brothers John and Jonathan Moor e are in the burial ground on the old road to Hudson. 2. Those composing the Whitcomb garrison lived also in Bolton, toward the northeast corner . Families descended from them resided there until recently. 3. The Priest garrison was at the easterly side of Bare Hill in Harvard 4. The Josiah White garrison was upon the east side of the Neck where Edward Houghton now lives. 5. Those belonging to Peter Joslin's garrison lived along the highway from the Sprague Bridg e to the North Village. 'Hervey' is an error for Hewes. 6. Those forming the Simon Willard garrison dwelt along the road thru Still River village. 7. Capt. Thomas Wilder's garrison was on the Old Common north of the highway and, accordin g to Joseph Willard, Esq., about twenty rods in rear of the house known as the Dr. David Steu art Robertson place. 8. The six men whose names are headed by that of Gamaliell Beman, had homes upon the east s lope of Wataquadock Hill. In the description of their lands frequent mention is made of 'th e cold spring' and 'the hill where Simon Pipo had a planting field.' 9. Rev. Andrew Gardner lived by the well a few rods westerly from the house of the late Co lonel Francis B. Fay; Samuel Prescott, across the road south; Thomas Sawyer, where his venera ble descendant, Mrs. Sally Case resides; Nathaniel Sawyer and Jabez Fairbank, half a mile wes terly in the Deer's Horns neighborhood. 10. The Prescott garrison site is in Clinton, southeast of and very near the crossing of Hig h and Water Streets. 11. Lieutenant Nathaniel Wilder's home was upon the slope of George Hill, next his father 's home lot. His brother Ephraim Wilder lived near, and his brother-in-law, Samuel Carter, o n the farm now owned by Frank D. Taylor. Thomas Ross lived half a mile north on the first lo t of John Smith. On July 30 1704, Sabbath morning or Monday morning Indians invaded Lancaster - Killed 2 o r 3 persons - burnt ye Meeting house and some other homes [Journal of Rev. John Pike]. Transcribed by Janice Farnsworth Subject: Lancaster in Philip's War Source: Source: The Early Records of Lancaster, Massachusetts 1643 -1725 Edited by Henry S. Nourse, A.M. Lancaster, 1884 p.100 Quanapaug finding that he must soon meet Philip, and having effected the the main purpose o f his errand, evaded his suspicious foes by a cunning stratagem, and on the 24th, 11th mo., 1 675, bought to his employers, the Governor and Council, full knowledge of the hostile force s and their fell intent. The emergency demanded speedy energy; it met inaction. Rumors of coming woe meantime stirred the air in the Nashaway valley. The chief military off icer, the minister, and other leading citizens went to the Bay to awaken the Council from the ir lethargy and beg for help. It was too late. February 9th 1675/6, about ten o'clock at ni ght, Job Kattenanit, the second spy, completely exhausted, dragged himself to Major Gookin' s door in Cambridge. He had deserted wife and children, and alone travelled upon snow shoe s through the pathless wilderness from New Braintree, a terribly fatiguing march of eighty mi les, to save his English friends. James Quanapaug had foretold that on the morrow the blow w ould be struck at Lancaster. Let Daniel Gookin tell Job's story and the fulfillment of the p rophecy. Daniel Gookin: 'He brought tidings that before he came from the enemy at Menemesse, a party of Indians, about four hundred, were marched forth to attack and burn Lancaster, an d on the morrow, which was February 10th they would attempt it. This time exactly suited with James his information before hinted, which was no t then credited as it should have been; and consequently no so good means used to prevent i t or at least to have lain in ambushments for the enemy. As soon as Major Gookin understoo d this tidings by Job, he rose out of his bed and, advising with Mr. Danforth one of the Coun cil that lived near him, they despatched away post in the night to Marlborough Concord and La ncaster, ordering forces to surround Lancaster with all speed. The posts were at Marlboroug h by break of day and Capt. Wadsworth with about forty soldiers marched away as speedily a s he could possibly to Lancaster (which was ten miles distant). But before he got there th e enemy had set fire on the bridge. But Capt. Wadsworth got over and beat off the enemy, re covering a garrison house, that stood near another bridge, belonging to Capt. Stevens, and s o through God's favor prevented the enemy from cutting off the garrison, God strangely preser ving that handful with Capt. Wadsworth, for the enemy were numerous, about four hundred, an d lay in ambushment for him on the common road, but his guides conducted him in a private way and so they got safe to Cyprian Stevens, his garrison house very near the other only bridge and a little ground parting them. This hous e burnt was the minister's house Mr. Rowlandson wherein were slain and taken captive about fo rty persons, the minister's wife and children amongst them. [Daniel Gookin's History of th e Praying Indians] p.104 London 1676. News from New England being a True and Last Account of the present Blood y Wars, etc. 'In a town called Nashaway which they set Fire to, and burnt to the Ground, taking no less th an 55 Persons into their Merciless Captivity, of these 55 Captives, the Minister of the Town s Relations made no less than 17 of them: viz. | Note | David L. Beckwith spells the surname Rugg for the children, footnoting 'The Prescott Memorial ' by William Prescott, 1870, p. 41. The two children are noted by Beckwith, without name o r sex. FFOW spells the name as rendered here. Source: John Prescott of Lancaster, MA 1643 - 1681 by F. L. The brothers migrated to New England about 1652 and settled first at Dedham (MA) but soon m oved to Lancaster. Jacob Farrer, Jr. was baptized at Heponstall, 3 Sept. 1641; married 11 No vember 1668, Hannah, daughter of George Hayward of Concord (MA) and was killed by the Indian s in King Philip's War at Lancaster (MA) 22 August 1675. John Rugg was born at Sowerby, Yorkshire (ENG) about 1632, and he died at Lancaster, Massachusetts, January 1696/7. He signed the Lancaster (MA) Covenant 12 February 1654 and he married at Lancaster (MA) 1655/56, Martha Prescott, baptized at Halifax Parish, Yorkshire (ENG) 11 March 1631/2; she died with her twin children at Lancaster (MA) in January 1656; he married (2) Hannah whose surname is unknown. (note Torrey gives the date of his 2nd marriage as 4 May, 1660) In spite of the fact that Martha left no posteri ty, many Ruggs through later marriages are descendants of John Prescott (note: according to t he Prescott Memorial p.41 Martha Prescott b. at Sowerby, Yorkshire Mar 11, 1632 m. York, 6 March 1624, the son of Jonathan and Grace (S mith) Fairbanks of that place. He signed the Lancaster (MA) Covenant 11 April 1659, having m arried at Lancaster 28 May 1658, Lydia Presc ott born at Watertown 15 August, 1641 the daughter of John Prescott and Mary (Gawkroger-Platts) Prescott. This was the first wedding in Lancaster, MA. He was killed by the Indians at Lancaster 10 Feb. 167 5/6 and Lydia (Prescott) Fairbanks m. (2) before 1713, Ellis Barron, son of Ellis Barron. Th e Fairbanks family came in the Speedwell to Boston, 1633 and settled at Dedham, MA in 1636 an d built the old Fairbanks House, still standing, perhaps the oldest colonial house in New Eng land. Mary (Gawkroger-Platts) Prescott was the grand-daughter of James Gawkroger and Jennet Fairbank. (C.A. Torrey, The Gawkroger Genealogy, 1959, p. 2, No. 4.) Matthias Farnsworth was born at Farnworth, co., Lancaster (ENG) 1612 (or 1615) His son (Benjamin) married 1695 Mary Prescott, dau of Capt. Jonas Prescott of Groton (MA). Matthias settled at Groton, then the bordering town of Lancaster (MA) and the family was always closely connected with the Prescotts. Farnworth was ten miles from Shevington, Lancashire, England . While Matthias Farnsworth and Ellis Barron did not settle at Lancaster nor sign the Town O rders there, they were both well known neighbors of John Prescott and their families intermar ried. (see the tombstones of all the Prescotts who married Farnsworths Listed at the Old Bury ing Ground, Groton, MA end of this report.) Ellis Barron was born at Bury (Lancashire, Eng.) about fifteen miles from Shevington, in 1608 . He settled at Watertown (MA where he died 30 October 1676. His son, Ellis Barron m. as hi s second wife, before 1713, Lydia (Prescott) Fairbanks. There were numerous Barron familie s at Wigan (Lancs, ENG) and other nearby towns. Elizabeth Barron was bp. at Bury co. Lancast er 28 April, 1594 the daughter of Ellis Barron of that place. James Prescott of Croston (ENG ) married at Croston, 1603, Alice Barron. James Draper, son of Thomas Draper of Heptonstall, co. York, was born in that place in 1618 a nd he died at Roxbury, MA July, 1691, aged 73 years. He married at Heptonstall (ENG) 21 Apri l 1646, Miriam Stansfield born there 27 Nov. 1625, died at Roxbury, MA January 1691, the daug hter of Gideon and Grace (Eastwood) Stansfield of Heptonstall. The came to New England soo n after their marriage. He was a proprietor at Roxbury, MA 1650 and signed the Town Orders a t Lancaster (MA) 3 April 1654, but returned to Roxbury. They had nine children. (Note: Jona s Prescott, son of John and Mary (Platts) Prescott m. 1672 Mary Loker dau of John Loker and his wife, Mary Drape r of Sudbury, MA) Richard Sutton who signed the Town Orders at Lancaster in 1653 was undoubtedly the grandson o f James and Isabella (Prescott) Sutton, who were married at Standish Parish, Lancashire (ENG ) 20 August 1570. Thomas Rowlandson, father of Rev. Joseph Rowlandson, m. after 1644 as his 2nd wife, Bridget M uzzey, who died at Lancaster June 14, 1662. (3) William Kerley, Sr. who d. there 14 July 1670 (there were five Ro wlandsons at Wigan, Lancashire Eng. and other at Standish Parish, Lancs., Eng. Four other friends (of John Prescott) from Lancashire signed the Lancaster Town Orders: Joh n Moore, Sr. 11 Mar. 1653/53; John Smith subscribed four days later; John Mansfield and Ensi gn John Moore both signed on 13 April 1654. However, while Mansfield, Moore and Smith are co mmon Lancashire names, we lack sufficient information concerning these four to be any other use towards the establishment of the identity of John Prescott than that of being f our fellow countrymen who came to Lancaster, Massachusetts. A grandson of John Smith marrie d Dorothy Prescott, granddaughter of Capt. Jonathan Prescott of Lancaster and Concord. Thi s makes a total of 27 English acquaintances who came to Lancaster at his behest. Probably John Shaw of Halifax co. York should also be added.
