| Note* | Note: Some historians have erroneously called Joseph, Jabez and Anna, children of above, th e children of Deacon Joseph Fairbanks, who was their grandfather. The error arises in that b oth of them are listed in official Records as Joseph and Mary. FFOW lists death in 1784, however, they have confused the death record of his son, Joseph Fai rbanks, Jr. with his. He outlived his son who died in the War of the Revolution. NSDar (id #336) page 55 says: David Gilmore served under Captain Joseph Fairbanks and Captai n John Baxter in the Massachusetts militia. page 442, errata page 337 also. NSDAR errata pa ge 413, Roll of Honor page 421 says: (1722-1802) Also lists birth as 'Harvard, where he died ,' as does NSDAR Vol 2. [note: Lancaster was a township. In the 1730s Harvard, as a town sub sumed part of the Township of Lancaster. The Fairbanks address changed from Lancaster to Har vard, but place of residence remained the same.] Served as Captain and Comanded a company a t the Lexington Alarm in Colonel Asa Whitcomb's Regiment. He was chosen, 1776, member of th e committee of Correspondence of Harvard where he was born and died. Also ancestor of DAR I D Nos. 15884, 19200, 29018, 37888, 42305, 51297. Also listed in errata page 100. Notes fro m Gertrude combined with the foregoing. Those notes found in Vol 43, page 115. She also show s his life span as 1722-1802 Surname standardized for research purposes. Given as Fairbank . May be the Joseph Fairbank listed in the 1790 Massachusetts census living at Harvard (pag e 222) with 3 adult males, 1 juvenile male and 3 females in the household. Other possibiliti es include 35801, 10816 and 38639. This one more likely because of singular surname. His entry in FFOW is footnoted: #3 Joseph death date listed in Harvard Town Records, but hi s will is also filed in 1802. They were well named--they were in fact 'sawyers.' `If the Sawyers were not born with saws in their hands, the saws came very readily to their hands.....Every town, village, road and lane throughout New England bears witness of their skill and industry.' They were millwrights, wheelrights, blacksmiths, coopersmiths, carpenters, coopers, and they were pioneers in the use of water power. Capt. died 5 Sep 1736, Lancaster, Worcester County, Mass. Som e records indicate that Thomas Sawyer, Jr. was probably the first White child born in Lancaster. During the French an d Indian War of 1705, 500 French & Indians attacked Lancaster and took Thomas Sawyer, Jr an d his son Elias prisoner along with John Biglow. They were taken from Thomas' house and were taken to Canada. On arriving there B iglow and Elias Sawyer were delivered into the hands of the French Governor. Thomas Sawyer th ey would not deliver up for money or other consideration. He had been brave and caused the death of several of their numb er. He was destined to torture. He was taken out, fastened to stake, the fagots placed aroun d him ready for a fire, and the Indians were assembled ready to rend the air with their hideous cries, mingled with his groan s of torture. At this moment a man appeared as a Friar, exhibiting what he claimed to be th e keys of purgatory, and told them if they tortured Sawyer he would unlock purgatory and pitc h them all in. Superstition prevailed, and then unbinding Sawyer they delivered him into th e hands of the French Govenor. Thomas Sawyer told the French Governor that there was a good p lace for a saw mill on the Chamblee River, near Montreal. They were very much in need of a sa w-mill, as there were none in Canada. Neither had they any man competent to build one. Thoma s proposed that he and Biglow would build a mill, and the compensation should be their freedo m. The terms were accepted. In a year's time they completed the mill and received their freed om. But Elias Sawyer was kept another year to teach others how to keep the mill in order and run it. He had been captured by the French an d Indians on October 15, 1705 at the mill in Lancaster. He was then amply rewarded and return ed home. He was a prominent man of the community and was representative at the General Court in 1707. Thomas Sawyer may have bee n married as many as 5 times. Anna: Widow of Thomas Ross. On July 30 1704, Sabbath morning or Monday morning Indians invaded Lancaster - Killed 2 o r 3 persons - burnt ye Meeting house and some other homes [Journal of Rev. John Pike]. Transcribed by Janice Farnsworth Subject: Lancaster in Philip's War Source: Source: The Early Records of Lancaster, Massachusetts 1643 -1725 Edited by Henry S. Nourse, A.M. Lancaster, 1884 p.100 Quanapaug finding that he must soon meet Philip, and having effected the the main purpose o f his errand, evaded his suspicious foes by a cunning stratagem, and on the 24th, 11th mo., 1 675, bought to his employers, the Governor and Council, full knowledge of the hostile force s and their fell intent. The emergency demanded speedy energy; it met inaction. Rumors of coming woe meantime stirred the air in the Nashaway valley. The chief military off icer, the minister, and other leading citizens went to the Bay to awaken the Council from the ir lethargy and beg for help. It was too late. February 9th 1675/6, about ten o'clock at ni ght, Job Kattenanit, the second spy, completely exhausted, dragged himself to Major Gookin' s door in Cambridge. He had deserted wife and children, and alone travelled upon snow shoe s through the pathless wilderness from New Braintree, a terribly fatiguing march of eighty mi les, to save his English friends. James Quanapaug had foretold that on the morrow the blow w ould be struck at Lancaster. Let Daniel Gookin tell Job's story and the fulfillment of the p rophecy. Daniel Gookin: 'He brought tidings that before he came from the enemy at Menemesse, a party of Indians, about four hundred, were marched forth to attack and burn Lancaster, an d on the morrow, which was February 10th they would attempt it. This time exactly suited with James his information before hinted, which was no t then credited as it should have been; and consequently no so good means used to prevent i t or at least to have lain in ambushments for the enemy. As soon as Major Gookin understoo d this tidings by Job, he rose out of his bed and, advising with Mr. Danforth one of the Coun cil that lived near him, they despatched away post in the night to Marlborough Concord and La ncaster, ordering forces to surround Lancaster with all speed. The posts were at Marlboroug h by break of day and Capt. Wadsworth with about forty soldiers marched away as speedily a s he could possibly to Lancaster (which was ten miles distant). But before he got there th e enemy had set fire on the bridge. But Capt. Wadsworth got over and beat off the enemy, re covering a garrison house, that stood near another bridge, belonging to Capt. Stevens, and s o through God's favor prevented the enemy from cutting off the garrison, God strangely preser ving that handful with Capt. Wadsworth, for the enemy were numerous, about four hundred, an d lay in ambushment for him on the common road, but his guides conducted him in a private way and so they got safe to Cyprian Stevens, his garrison house very near the other only bridge and a little ground parting them. This hous e burnt was the minister's house Mr. Rowlandson wherein were slain and taken captive about fo rty persons, the minister's wife and children amongst them. [Daniel Gookin's History of th e Praying Indians] p.104 London 1676. News from New England being a True and Last Account of the present Blood y Wars, etc. 'In a town called Nashaway which they set Fire to, and burnt to the Ground, taking no less th an 55 Persons into their Merciless Captivity, of these 55 Captives, the Minister of the Town s Relations made no less than 17 of them: viz. Mrs. Rowlandson, the Ministers Wife, and thre e of his children, her Sister [Elizabeth Kerley] and seven Children and her Sister Drew [Hann ah Divoll] and four Children. Another pamphlet published in London late in the same year, entitled 'A new and further Narra tive of the State of New England,' copies its facts from the preceding.
