Zeus (?)1 (M) Pedigree | ||
| Father-Bio* | Cronus, King of the Titans (?)1 | |
| Mother-Bio* | Rhea (?)1 | |
| Note* | According to a Cretan myth that was later adopted by the Greeks, Cronus,king of the Titans, upon learning that one of his children was fated todethrone him, swallowed his children as soon as they were born. ButRhea, his wife, saved the infant Zeus by substituting a stone wrapped inswaddling clothes for Cronus to swallow and hiding Zeus in a cave onCrete. There he was nursed by the nymph (or female goat) Amalthaea andguarded by the Curetes (young warriors), who clashed their weapons todisguise the baby's cries. After Zeus grew to manhood he led a revoltagainst the Titans and succeeded in dethroning Cronus, perhaps with theassistance of his brothers Hades and Poseidon, with whom he then divideddominion over the world. As ruler of heaven Zeus led the gods to victory against the Giants(offspring of Gaea and Tartarus) and successfully crushed several revoltsagainst him by his fellow gods. According to the Greek poet Homer, heavenwas located on the summit of Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece andthe logical home for a weather god. The other members of the pantheonresided there with Zeus and were subject to his will. From his exaltedposition atop Mount Olympus Zeus was thought to omnisciently observe theaffairs of men, seeing everything, governing all, and rewarding goodconduct and punishing evil. Besides dispensing justice, Zeus was theprotector of cities, the home, property, strangers, guests, andsupplicants. Zeus was well known for his amorousness--a source of perpetual discordwith his wife, Hera--and he had many love affairs with both mortal andimmortal women. In order to achieve his amorous designs, Zeus frequentlyassumed animal forms, such as that of a cuckoo when he ravished Hera, aswan when he ravished Leda, or a bull when he carried off Europa. Notableamong his offspring were the twins Apollo and Artemis, by the TitanessLeto; Helen and the Dioscuri, by Leda of Sparta; Persephone, by thegoddess Demeter; Athena, born from his head after he had swallowed theTitaness Metis; Hephaestus, Hebe, Ares, and Eileithyia, by his wife,Hera; Dionysus, by the goddess Semele; and many others. Though regarded by Greek religionists everywhere as omnipotent and thehead of the pantheon, Zeus's very universality tended to reduce hisimportance compared to that of powerful local divinities like Athena andHera. Although statues of Zeus Herkeios (Guardian of the House) andaltars of Zeus Xenios (Hospitable) graced the forecourts of houses, andthough his mountaintop shrines were visited by pilgrims, Zeus did nothave a temple at Athens until the late 6th century BC, and even histemple at Olympia postdated that of Hera. In art Zeus was represented as a bearded, dignified, and mature man ofstalwart build; his most prominent symbols were the thunderbolt and theeagle. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97]1 | |

| Note* | Pleiades, in Greek mythology, the seven daughters of the Titan Atlas andthe Oceanid Pleione: Maia, Electra, Taygete, Celaeno, Alcyone, Sterope,and Merope. They all fell in love with gods (except Merope, who loved amortal) and were the mothers of gods. The Pleiades eventually formed aconstellation. One myth recounts that they all killed themselves out of grief over thedeath of their sisters, the Hyades. Another explains that after sevenyears of being pursued by Orion, a Boeotian giant, they were turned intostars by Zeus. Orion became a constellation, too, and continued to pursuethe sisters across the sky. The faintest star of the Pleiades was thoughtto be either Merope, who was ashamed of loving a mortal, or Electra,grieving for Troy, her son's city. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97]1 | |

Cronus, King of the Titans (?)1 (M) Pedigree
| Father-Bio* | Uranus (?)1 | |
| Mother-Bio* | Gaea (?)1 | |
| Note* | Cronus, also spelled CRONOS, or KRONOS, in ancient Greek religion, maledeity who was worshiped by the pre-Hellenic population of Greece butprobably was not widely worshiped by the Greeks themselves; he was lateridentified with the Roman god Saturn. Cronus' functions were connectedwith agriculture; in Attica his festival, the Kronia, celebrated theharvest and resembled the Saturnalia. In art he was depicted as an oldman holding an implement, probably originally a sickle but interpreted asa harpe, or curved sword. In Greek mythology Cronus was the son of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea(Earth), being the youngest of the 12 Titans. On the advice of his motherhe castrated his father with a harpe, thus separating Heaven from Earth.He now became the king of the Titans, and took for his consort his sister Rhea; she bore by him Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon, all ofwhom he swallowed because his own parents had warned that he would beoverthrown by his own child. When Zeus was born, however, Rhea hid himin Crete and tricked Cronus into swallowing a stone instead. Zeus grewup, forced Cronus to disgorge his brothers and sisters, waged war onCronus, and was victorious. After his defeat by Zeus, Cronus became,according to different versions of his story, either a prisoner inTartarus or king of the Golden Age. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97]1 | |

| Note* | Rhea, in Greek religion, ancient goddess, probably pre-Hellenic inorigin, who was worshiped sporadically throughout the Greek world. Shewas associated with fruitfulness and had affinities with Gaea (Earth) andthe Great Mother of the Gods. A daughter of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea, shemarried her brother Cronus, who, warned that one of his children would befated to overthrow him, swallowed his children Hestia, Demeter, Hera,Hades, and Poseidon soon after they were born. Rhea concealed the birthof Zeus in a cave on Mount Dicte in Crete and gave Cronus a stone wrappedin swaddling clothes. This he swallowed in the belief that it was Zeus.Subsequently, Cronus was vanquished by Zeus and was forced to disgorgethe swallowed children. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97]1 | |

Uranus (?)1 (M) Pedigree
| Mother-Bio* | Gaea (?)1 | |
| Note* | Uranus, in Greek mythology, the personification of heaven. According toHesiod's Theogony, Gaea (Earth), emerging from primeval Chaos, producedUranus, the Mountains, and the Sea. From Gaea's subsequent union withUranus were born the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecatoncheires. Uranus hated his offspring and hid them in Gaea's body. She appealed tothem for vengeance, but Cronus (a Titan) alone responded. With the harpe(a scimitar) he removed Uranus' testicles as he approached Gaea. From thedrops of Uranus' blood that fell on her were born the Furies, the Giants,and the Meliai (ash-tree nymphs). The severed genitals floated on thesea, producing a white foam, from which sprang the goddess of love,Aphrodite. Cronus by his action had separated Heaven and Earth. Uranusalso had other consorts: Hestia, Nyx, Hemera, and Clymene. There was no cult of Uranus in classical Greece. This circumstance,together with other elements in the story, suggests pre-Greek origins.The use of the harpe points to an Oriental source, and the story bears aclose resemblance to the Hittite myth of Kumarbi. Gaea (?)1 (F) | ||
| Note* | Gaea, also called GE, Greek personification of the Earth as a goddess.Mother and wife of Uranus (Heaven), from whom the Titan Cronus, her lastborn child by him, separated her, she was also mother of the otherTitans, the Gigantes, the Erinyes, and the Cyclopes; hence literature andart sometimes made her the enemy of Zeus, for the Titans and Gigantesthreatened him. Gaea may have been originally a mother goddess worshippedin Greece before the Hellenes introduced the cult of Zeus. Less widelyworshipped in historic times, Gaea was described as the giver of dreamsand the nourisher of plants and young children. [Encyclopaedia BritannicaCD '97]1 | |
