Event-Misc X, Type: Progenitor1
Note* NOTE: Generations 57-53 (Gibica de Burgundy - Gundioc, King of Burgundy)are based on Latrie's 1889 research (cf. Latrie, M. 1889), as recorded byTurton, (Turton, W. 1984, 54) in 1928. Schwennicke (ES, I:1), 1984research, does not carry the lineage beyond Chilperic (Gen. 52); thus Irecord the line with the warning that Gen. 53-57 may prove to beunsound. [Roderick W. Note* Built Danewirk, 936-940. [Roderick W. Stuart, Royalty for Commoners, 3rded., 1998] Danewirk, also spelled DANEWERK, DANNEWIRK, or DANNEWERK, DanishDANNEVIRKE, or DANEVIRKE(Danes' Bulwark), the ancient frontier rampart ofthe Danes against the Germans, extending 10.5 miles (17 kilometres) fromjust south of the town of Schleswig to the marshes of the river Trenenear the village of Hollingstedt. The rampart was begun about AD 808 byGodfred (Gudfred), king of Vestfold. In 934 it was penetrated by theGerman king Henry I, after which it was extended by King Harald IBluetooth (c. 940-c. 985); but it was again stormed by the German emperorOtto II in 974. After the union of Schleswig and Holstein under theDanish crown in the 15th century, the Danewirk fell into decay; but in1848 it was hastily strengthened by the Danes, who were, however, unableto hold it in face of the superiority of Prussian artillery, and on April23 it was stormed. From 1850 onward, Danewirk was again repaired and strengthened at greatcost and was considered impregnable; but in the war of 1864 the Prussiansturned it by crossing the Schlei, and it was abandoned by the Danes onFebruary 6 without a blow. It was thereupon destroyed by the Prussians. In spite of this destruction, however, a long line of imposing ruinsstill remains. The systematic excavation of these, begun in 1900, yieldedsome notable finds, especially of valuable runic inscriptions.[Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97, DANEWIRK]1

Note* Nomenoë or Nominoe (d. 851), duke of Brittany. To pacific Brittany,Louis the Debonair named him count of Vannes in 819 amd governor or dukeof Brittany in 826. Throughout the reign of Louis, Nomenoë maintainedpeace in Brittany. But in 841 he resolved to make himself independent ofCharles the Bald. In 843, Charles made a vain attempt to subdueBrittany. In 844 Nomenoë invaded Maine, and in 845 the emperor wascompetely defeated at Ballon near Bain-de-Bretagne. Having resolved todetach the duchy from the ecclesiastical province of Tours, Nomenoëaccused the Frankish bishops of Vannes, Quimper, Dol and Léon of simonyat the council of Coëtlouh in 848, replaced them by Bretons, and erectedDol into a metropolitan see. In 849 Nomenoë attacked the Frankish countyof Anjou. Charles established a garrison at Rennes. Nomenoë seizedRennes, Nantes and Upper Brittany, and ravaged Maine. In 851 he seizedAnjou and invaded Beauce. He died suddenly, leaving as his successor hisson Erispoë. [Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1961 ed., Vol. 16, p. 482]1

Note* Hoel I Mawr, King of Brittany (Welsh, Hywel/Latin, Hovelius/English,Howel). As a son of Budic II's first marriage, King Hoel the Great wasnephew to the famous High-King Arthur of Britain. Tradition says he spentmuch of his youth at the King's Court and, although he returned toBrittany when his father was recalled, he was soon asked back to help hisuncle overcome the Saxon scourge. Hoel supposedly landed at Southamptonand immediately moved north with a considerable army to assist KingArthur at the Battle of Dubglas, the Siege of Caer-Ebrauc (York) and theBattle of Celidon Coit, before being besieged himself at Caer-Brithon(Dumbarton Rock). Hoel's greatest hour, however, was at the triumphantBattle of Mount Badon. Later he took part in Arthur's continentalcampaigns, conquering Gaul and enabling Arthur to establish hisgovernment in Paris! Hoel then returned to his own Kingdom, where KingTristram of Lyonesse was supposed to have helped him to victory during aBreton Civil War. Hoel probably ruled jointly in Cornouaille with hisageing father. They apparently both died in the same year (545). Literarywriters have transformed Hoel into a Knight of the Round Table. [DavidNash Ford, Kings of Brittany and Princes of Cornouaille] ---------- NOTE: 'Kings of Brittany: The Breton Descendants of Conan Meriadog' and'The Breton Descendants of Conan Meriadog' by David Nash Ford show Hoel IMawr to be the son of Budic II, son of Erich ap Aldrien, son of Aldrienap Selyfan, son of Salomon. However, Roderick W. Stuart, 'Royalty forCommoners' Third Edition (1998), says Hoel is the son of Budig I, son ofAudren (Aldrien), son of Salomon. I have changed my records to reflectthe line of descent as given by Ford as, date wise, this lineage makesmuch more sense.1

Note* Aldrien (Welsh, Aldwr/Latin, Aldroenus/English, Aldron), King ofBrittany, was Gradlon's grandson, who reigned after his little-knownfather, King Salomon I. He appears, on occasion, to have been calledDaniel. As the heir of Eudaf Hen's nephew, it was to the young Aldrienthat Gwithilin, the Archbishop of London, travelled with a deputation tooffer him the British High-Throne. There had been no monarch in Britainsince the Emperor Gracian's death, and in 410 the Roman army andadministration had decided to completely withdraw back to Rome. Aldrienwas aware of the chaotic state of the country, and of the damage incurredfrom invading Picts, Saxons and Irish. He was, therefore, unwilling totake on the kingdom but sent his brother, Constantine, in his place, withtwo thousand armed men to secure the throne. Aldrien died some fiftyyears later, in 464. Note* Gradlon Mawr, 'King' of Brittany (born c, AD 330) (Welsh-Erbin,Latin-Urbanus, English-Urban). The eldest son of Conan Meriadoc by hissecond wife, St. Dareca, though known as Gradlon the Great in Brittany, was mostly called Urban outside his kingdom. In his youth, when he was apagan, Gradlon is said to have fallen deeply in love with a beautifulhalf-woman/half-fairy. Unfortunately however, he later offended thismysterious creature by converting to Christianity and seeking the counselof St. Gwenole. The fairy fled from Gradlon across a torrential river, warning him not to follow. The brave Breton, however, plunged headlonginto the swirling waters after her. The fairy was forced to save hislife, but spurned him nevertheless and hated him all the more for havingmade her admit that she loved him still. Gradlon took quickly to the new religion. While out hunting, one day, hebecame separated from his entourage and found himself lost in the greatForest of Menez-Hom. Almost dead from exhaustion and hunger, heeventually stumbled across the hermitage of St. Corentin (now built uponby Plomodiern). St. Corentin kept a marvellous fish from which he cut aslice to sustain him every day. The fish would be found miraculouslywhole again in the morning. The saint happily shared his meal with theBreton King and he was thus brought back to health. As a reward for hishospitality, Gradlon made St. Corentin the first Bishop of Cornouaille. The King's first fairy-love returned, in later years, to possess the mindof Gradlon's daughter, Dahut, who thence became the most wicked of Bretonwomen. She built a castle over the River Argent in the Huelgoat Forest,to which a different suitor was invited every night. Each was given ablack mask to wear so he could not look upon Dahut's face. Then therevelries began. At the end of a thoroughly enjoyable evening, however, hidden springs would shoot out from the mask and strangle the wearer!Dahut would then have the body thrown into the nearby forest caves. Gradlon's main power-base was Cornouaille and his capital was thebeautiful city of Caer Ys which stood in, what is now, the Bay ofDouarnenez. It was a low lying city with a large dyke to keep back thesea. Gradlon kept the key to the sluice gates hung around his neck at alltimes. One night, however, the evil Dahut stole the key while her fatherwas sleeping and slipped away to open the gates in some sort of sadisticgame. The raging sea immediately invaded the city. Gradlon awoke withbarely enough time to jump on his horse and race ahead of the torrentialwaves. Spying his daughter in the streets, and being unaware of hercrimes, he just managed to pull her up behind him. On they rode ahead ofthe waves until they reached higher ground where St. Gwenole was waiting.'Cast off the demon that is riding behind you!' he cried, but Gradlon didnot understand the saint. So Gwenole pushed Dahut into the sea himself, and immediately the waves were calm once more. Gradlon made his new capital at Corspotium (Quimper), where his statuecan be seen in front of the Cathedral. It is said that the bells of thechurches of Ys can still be heard on stormy nights at sea. Upon Gradlon'sdeath, he was succeeded by his son, Salomon I; followed by his grandson,Aldrien. [David Nash Ford, The Kings of Brittany and Princes ofCornouaille]1

Note* Brittany was originally called Armorica after the Celtic tribe who livedthere during the Pre-Roman & Gallo-Roman periods. The British firstsettled the area in the late 380s when the Roman-British general, MagnusMaximus, invaded Gaul in order to press his claims to the Imperialthrone. As a reward for his help in this matter, Maximus gave Armorica tohis wife's cousin, Conan Meriadoc. Conan supposedly populated his new kingdom with his armed followers but,of course, they were woefully short of female companions. Conan sent backto Britain for wives, not only for his men, but for himself also. A stormprevented the ladies from reaching Brittany, so Conan's men were forcedto undertake mixed marriages with the local inhabitants. However, toensure that their children only spoke the British language, the soldier'scut out their wives' tongues! Later waves of newcomers from Britain bolstered the population, and theimmigrant leaders often set up their own petty kingdoms orprincipalities, such as Poher: a minor principaility that appears to havechanged hands rather a lot, particularly between the Franks and BritishKings still ruling on the mainland. Conan ruled across Brittany, but thecentre of his power appears to have been in the Vannetais. In latergenerations, the Kingdom was divided amongst his descendants: the elderbranch became Princes of Cornouaille, while a younger dynasty ruled inDomnonée. The origins of Broërec (Vannetais) are unclear, though it wasnamed after a 5th century prince called Waroc. Later times brought several periods of civil war, as the successionbecame unclear and different lords vied for the upper hand. This wasparticularly true after the death of Alain II Hir (the Tall) in 690.Short-lived stability returned with the House of Dremrud, but soonevaporated again before being finally restored with Frankish help at thebeginning of the 9th century. Around a hundred years later, the Kingdomwas reduced to a Duchy, though it didn't finally lose its independenceuntil after Anne, the last Duchess of Brittany, married King Charles VIIIof France and the Union Treaty of Vannes was signed in 1532. [David NashFord, Kings of Brittany: The Breton Descendants of Conan Meriadog] ---------- Conan Meriadoc, 'King' of Dumnonia & Brittany (born c.305) (Welsh-Cynan,Latin-Conanus, English-Conan). Conan was the son of Octavius the Old'sbrother, Gerontius, (or Octavius himself according to the Dream of MacsenWledig). He had expected to inherit his uncle's position of influence inwhat is now Wales, until his cousin, Helena, married the Roman citizen,Magnus Maximus. Originally, Conan was considerably put out by this man'srise to power and he organised a rebellion against him, aided by Pictsand Scots. However, being defeated, Conan became great friends with hisrival and travelled with Maximus to the continent to help him becomeEmperor of the West. He was given control over Armorica (modern Brittany)as a reward for killing the previous holder of the title. His newprovince was well settled by his men-at-arms, however they lacked wives. Therefore, in order to populate the area, he sent to his uncle's oldally, Donaut of Dumnonia for numerous Cornish ladies. Conan proposed tocement the alliance of their two peoples by marrying Donaut's daughter,Ursula. Though Donaut was delighted at the match, Ursula had her heartset on a life devoted only to God. She agreed to the marriage on thecondition that she first be allowed to go on a pilgrimage throughoutEurope. Conan appears to have joined her in Rome, where the two must havebeen married, probably by Pope Cyriacus himself. He apparently did nottravel to Cologne where Ursula died. In later years, he inheritedDumnonia from his father-in-law. The Governorships of Armorica andDumnonia were united for only a short time, for, as his second wife,Conan married St. Patrick's sister, Dareca of Ireland, and left one eachof his Kingdoms to the sons of his two marriages, Gadeon and Gradlon. Heprobably died about 395. [David Nash Ford, Early British Kingdoms:Biography of Conan Meriadoc]2
