Note* Gunther, also called GUNDICAR, GUNDICARIUS, GUNNAR, GUNDAHAR, orGUNTHARIUS, Burgundian king (died 437) who was the hero of medievallegends. The historical Gunther led the Burgundians across the Rhine in the early5th century, establishing a kingdom at Worms. He supported the imperialusurper Jovinus (411) and fell in battle against the Huns in 437. Gunther (called Gunnar) figures in the Eddaic poem Atlakvida, in which heis slain by Atli (Attila) the Hun and avenged by his sister, Atli's wife.In the 11th-century Latin poem (Waltharius), he and his warriors tryunsuccessfully to kill the hero (Walter of Aquitaine) and steal histreasure. The 12th-century German epic Nibelungenlied associates him withSiegfried, who helps Gunther to win Brunhild and in return marriesGunther's sister Kriemhild. Note* CHILDERIC I (c. 437-481), king of the Salian Franks, succeeded hisfather, Merwech (Merovech), as king about 457. With his tribe he wasestablished around the town of Tournai on lands which he had received asa 'foederatus' of the Romans, and for some time he kept the peace withhis allies. About 463, in conjunction with the Roman general Egidius, heassisted Count Paul in attempting to check an invasion of the Saxons.Paul having perished in the struggle, Childeric defended Angers againstthe Saxons, recovered from them the islands they had seized at the mouthof the Loire and destroyed their forces. The Saxon chief Odoacer nowagreed to serve the Romans and the two chieftains, now reconciled,intercepted a band of the Alamanni. These are all the facts known abouthim. The stories of his early life by the Franks, of his stay of eightyears in Thuringia with King Basin and his wife (or sister) Basine, ofhis return when a faithful servant advised him that he could safely do soby sending to him half of a piece of gold which he had broken with himand of the arrival at Tournai of Queen Basine, whom he married, arepresevered by Gregory of Tours, and have found a place in French epicpoetry. After the fall of the western empire in 476 there is no doubtthat Childeric regarded himself as freed from his engagements towardRome. He died in 481 and was buried at Tournai, leaving a son Clovis,afterward king of the Franks. His tomb was discovered in 1653, whennumerous precious objects, arms, jewels, coins and a ring with his nameand the image of along-haired warrior, were found. Note MEROVECH, an early king of the Salian Franks, who succeeded to Clodio inthe middle of the 5th century, and soon became a legendary figure. Atthe great battle of Mauriac (the Catalaunian fields), in which Aetiuschecked the invasion of the Huns (451), there were present in the Romanarmy a number of Frankish foederati, and a later authority states thatMerovech (Merovaeus) was their leader. Merovech was the father ofChilderic I (457-481), and grandfather of Clovis (481-511).[Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1961 ed., Vol. 15, pg. 283, MEROVINGIANS] ---------- Merovech, also spelled MEROVICH, MEROVEUS, MERWICH, or MEROWIG, FrenchMÉROVÉE, German MEROWECH (fl. c. AD 450), king of the Salian Franks, fromwhom Frankish tradition held the Merovingian dynasty to have taken itsname. He was the father of Childeric I (d. 481/482) and grandfather ofClovis I (c. 466-511). Nothing definite is known of Merovech's life. Heis mentioned in Gregory of Tours's History of the Franks and, accordingto later sources, fought against Attila the Hun at the Battle of theCatalaunian Plains (451).
