| Note* | The first of this family upon record is Sir William de Mohun, one of thecompanions in arms of the Conqueror, who is stated to have had no lessthan 47 stout knights of name and note in his retinue at the battle ofHastings, and for the good services rendered to his royal master in thatcelebrated conflict, to have obtained the Castle Dunster, with 55 manorsin the co. of Somerset, besides several other lordships in Wilts,Devonshire, and Warwickshire. Sir William was s. by his son, William deMohun. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant and Extinct Peerages, Burke'sPeerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 369, Mohun, Barons Mohun] ---------- From a write up in the American Genealogist magazine done by NeilThompson in Salt Lake city on the Trowbridge Family: 'Mohun of the baronial house of Mohun of Dunster Castle. The Mohun wivesrose out of the great families which led the Norman conquest: Gant, theBreton lords of Richmond, Toeni or Tony, Fitz-Piers and Clare. Behindthese lay such well known continental families as the counts of Flandersand Hainaut, the dukes of Normandy, the ancestors of the Capetian Kingsof France, and the Carolingian German emperors and kings of France. Itis therefore fitting to commence this study with the house of Mohyn.Nevertheless the work is not confined to a search for royal ancestry. The forebears of Trowbridge form a tapestry of interwoven feudal familiesover large areas of the western counties and several other counties aswell.'
