Walter FitzOther , Constable of Windsor1,2 (M) b. c 1032, d. a 1100 Pedigree | ||
| Father-Bio* | c 1000 | Othere, Kt. (?)2 |
| Note* | At the time of the General Survey, Walter Fitz-Other possessed threelordships in Surrey, two in Hampshire, three in Bucks, and four inMiddlesex, of which Stanwell, in the latter county, was the chief placeof abode of himself and his descendants for several succeeding ages.Those lordships, manors, and lands, moreover, were held of his father,Sir Other, in the reign of Edward the Confessor. Walter Fitz-Other waswarden of all the forests in Berkshire, and castellan of Windsor in thetime of William the Conqueror. The name and family of his wife are indoubt, as likewise the seniority of his sons, William, Robert, andGerald. Gerald is called, in the Duke of Leinster's pedigree, theeldest, although placed youngest on the pedigree of the Earls of Kerry,and the latter disposition is supported by Segar, Dugdale, and Anstis,all eminent members of the Heralds' College. These Heralds maintain thethe appellation of Fitz-Walter was given to Gerald because he was theyoungest son. Lodge, however, protests against such a conclusion andsays, 'It deserves and inquiry how the consequences of his being ayounger son can be drawn from his having the appellation of Fitz-Walter!The custom of that age,' he continued, 'warrants the affirmation of thecontrary, and that the eldest son, especially, assumed for his surnamethe christian name of his father, with the addition of Fitz, etc., andthis continued in use until surnames came to be fixed about the time ofEdward I, and among many families until long after that time, youngersons being not so frequently known or called by their fathers' christianname, as by that of his office or employment. For which reason the twobrothers of Gerald are not called Fitz-Walter, but Windsor.'
