  1. Otto I, byname OTTO THE GREAT, German OTTO DER GROSSE (b. Nov. 23,912--d. May 7, 973, Memleben, Thuringia), duke of Saxony (as Otto II,936-961), German king (from 936), and Holy Roman emperor (962-973), whoconsolidated the German Reich by his suppression of rebellious vassalsand his decisive victory over the Hungarians. His use of the church as astabilizing influence created a secure empire and stimulated a culturalrenaissance. Early years. Otto was the son of the future king Henry I, of the Liudolfing, or Saxon, dynasty, and his second wife, Matilda. Little is known of his earlyyears, but he probably shared in some of his father's campaigns. Hemarried Edith, daughter of the English king Edward the Elder, in 930; sheobtained as her dowry the flourishing town of Magdeburg. Nominated byHenry as his successor, Otto was elected king by the German dukes atAachen on Aug. 7, 936, a month after Henry's death, and crowned by thearchbishops of Mainz and Cologne. While Henry I had controlled his vassal dukes only with difficulty, thenew king firmly asserted his suzerainty over them. This led immediatelyto war, especially with Eberhard of Franconia and his namesake, Eberhardof Bavaria, who were joined by discontented Saxon nobles under theleadership of Otto's half-brother Thankmar. Thankmar was defeated andkilled, the Franconian Eberhard submitted to the King, and Eberhard ofBavaria was deposed and outlawed. In 939, however, Otto's younger brotherHenry revolted; he was joined by Eberhard of Franconia and by Giselbertof Lotharingia and supported by the French king Louis IV. Otto was againvictorious: Eberhard fell in battle, Giselbert was drowned in flight, andHenry submitted to his brother. Nevertheless, in 941 Henry joined aconspiracy to murder the King. This was discovered in time, and, whereasthe other conspirators were punished, Henry was again forgiven.Thenceforward he remained faithful to his brother and, in 947, was giventhe dukedom of Bavaria. The other German dukedoms were likewise bestowedon relatives of Otto. Foreign conquests. Despite these internal difficulties, Otto found time to strengthen and toextend the frontiers of the kingdom. In the east the margraves Gero andHermann Billung were successful against the Slavs, and their gains wereconsolidated by the founding of the Monastery of St. Maurice inMagdeburg, in 937, and of two bishoprics, in 948. In the north, threebishoprics (followed in 968 by a fourth) were founded to extend theChristian mission in Denmark. Otto's first campaign in Bohemia was, however, a failure, and it was not until 950 that the Bohemian princeBoleslav I was forced to submit and to pay tribute. Having thus strengthened his own position, Otto could not only resistFrance's claims to Lorraine (Lotharingia) but also act as mediator inFrance's internal troubles. Similarly, he extended his influence intoBurgundy. Moreover, when the Burgundian princess Adelaide, the widowedqueen of Italy whom the margrave Berengar of Ivrea had taken prisoner, appealed to him for help, Otto marched into Italy in 951, assumed thetitle of king of the Lombards, and married Adelaide himself, his firstwife having died in 946. In 952 Berengar did homage to him as his vassalfor the kingdom of Italy. Otto had to break off his first Italian campaign because of a revolt inGermany, where Liudolf, his son by Edith, had risen against him with theaid of several magnates. Otto found himself compelled to withdraw toSaxony; but the position of the rebels began to deteriorate when theMagyars invaded Germany in 954, for the rebels could now be accused ofcomplicity with the enemies of the Reich. After prolonged fighting,Liudolf had to submit in 955. This made it possible for Otto to defeatthe Magyars decisively in the Battle of the Lechfeld, near Augsburg, inAugust 955; they never invaded Germany again. In the same year Otto andthe margrave Gero also won a victory over the Slavs. A further series ofcampaigns led, by 960, to the subjection of the Slavs between the middleElbe and the middle Oder. The archbishopric of Magdeburg was founded in968 with three suffragan bishoprics. Even Mieszko of Poland paid tributeto the German king. Coronation as emperor. In May 961 Otto procured the election and coronation of the six-year-oldOtto II, his elder son by Adelaide, as German king. Then he went for asecond time to Italy on the appeal of Pope John XII, who was hard pressedby Berengar of Ivrea. Arriving in Rome on Feb. 2, 962, Otto was crownedemperor, and 11 days later a treaty, known as the Privilegium Ottonianum, was concluded, to regulate relations between emperor and pope. Thisconfirmed and extended the temporal power of the papacy, but it is amatter of controversy whether the proviso enabling the emperor to ratifypapal elections was included in the original version of the treaty oradded in December 963, when Otto deposed John XII for treating withBerengar and set up Leo VIII as pope. Berengar was captured and taken toGermany, and in 964 a revolt of the Romans against Leo VIII wassuppressed. When Leo VIII died in 965, the Emperor chose John XIII for pope, but Johnwas expelled by the Romans. Otto, therefore, marched for a third time toItaly, where he stayed from 966 to 972. He subdued Rome and even advancedinto the Byzantine south of Italy. Prolonged negotiations with Byzantiumresulted in the marriage of Otto II to the Byzantine princess Theophano,in 972. Having returned to Germany, the Emperor held a great assembly ofhis court at Quedlinburg on March 23, 973. He died in Memleben severalweeks later and was buried in Magdeburg at the side of his first wife. Assessment. Otto I's achievement rests mainly on his consolidation of the Reich. Hedeliberately made use of the bishops to strengthen his rule and thuscreated that 'Ottonian church system of the Reich' that was to provide astable and long-lasting framework for Germany. By his victoriouscampaigns, he gave Germany peace and security from foreign attack, andthe preeminent position that he won as ruler gave him a sort of hegemonyin Europe. His Italian policy and the acquisition of the imperial crownconstituted a link with the old Carolingian tradition and was to prove agreat responsibility for the German people in the future. All areas underOtto's rule prospered, and the resultant flowering of culture has beencalled the Ottonian renaissance. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97].

  1. Rudolf II (d. July 11, 937), king of Burgundy (912-937) who ruled Italyfor nearly four years (923-926) during the chaotic period at the end ofthe Carolingian era. The son of Rudolf I, founder of the kingdom of Jurane (Upper) Burgundy(i.e., the part of Burgundy north of Provence), and a descendant of theWelf (Guelf) family, Rudolf II was offered the throne of Italy by Italiannobles disaffected with their king, Berengar of Friuli. Crowned at Paviain 922, Rudolf fought and defeated Berengar the next year near Piacenza. After Berengar's murder (924), Rudolf ruled both Jurane Burgundy andItaly, residing alternately in the two kingdoms. In 926 Italian nobles, dissatisfied with his reign, made overtures to Hugh of Provence, theactual master of Provence, which was only nominally held by the emperorLouis III (the Blind). Rudolf, recognizing the weakness of his position, returned to Burgundy, and Hugh became king of Italy. When Italian leadersproposed to recall Rudolf to the throne, Hugh concluded a treaty (c. 931)ceding Provence to Rudolf in return for Rudolf's renunciation of allclaims to the kingdom of Italy. All Burgundy was thus united under hisrule. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97].

Note Boso, French BOSON (d. Jan. 11, 887, Vienne [France]), king of lowerBurgundy, or Provence (from 877). The son of Buvin (or Beuves), Count of Ardennes, Boso was given thegovernance of Lombardy (876) by his brother-in-law Charles II the Bald, king of the West Franks (France), and received the title of duke. Duringthe minorities of the West Frankish kings Louis III and Carloman, hedemonstrated his ambition by convoking the bishops of Provence and havingthem proclaim him their king (Oct. 15, 879) and thereafter proceeded toexpand his domains. The territory over which he usurped royal authorityincluded not only Provence but many lands to the north, as far asAutun--an enlarged Burgundy. In succeeding years, especially 880-882, Boso lost many of the marginalnorthern lands to the French and German Carolingians, who werereestablishing their authority. He was succeeded by his son, Louis, whoin 901 became the emperor Louis III. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97,BOSO]2

He was also Comte de Berry, Autun, et Vienne. He was Governor of Burgundy under the Carolingi His wife, ERMENGARDE, felt that as she was the daughter of an emporer, she ought to be marrie n right. She persuaded Pope John VIII to crown Boson King of Provence. The years following the death of Boso's father-in-law, KING LOUIS II of Italy without a male E BALD, King of France, was nominally also King of Italy. Boso was his main representative. B Settipani says that King Boso of Provence was the brother of Richard, duke of Burgundy, and s t male line of Hieronymus, son of Charles Martel, but none of the intervening generations is Proven by the contemporary 'Annals Bertiniani' ('Annals of St. Bertin' in English)..

Note Holy Roman emperor (840-55), and eldest son of Holy Roman Emperor LouisI, the Pious, and grandson of Charlemagne. Lothair became coruler withhis father in 817 and was crowned by the pope six years later. He twiceconspired with his brothers in revolts against their father. In 839Lothair received the eastern part of the empire in addition to Italy, which he had received in 822. After the death of Louis I, Lothairattempted to assert his power over his brothers, but he was defeated bythem at Fontenoy, France, on June 25, 841. By the Treaty of Verdun (843),the title of Holy Roman emperor was guaranteed to Lothair, together withsovereignty over Italy, Burgundy, Alsace, Lorraine, and the LowCountries. After having divided his kingdom among his three sons, Lothairretired to a monastery. His second son, sometimes called Lothair II(circa 835-69), reigned from 855 to 869 over the kingdom of Lotharingia.
Event-Misc* M3
Note* Lothair I. [795-855], Roman emperor, was the eldest son of the emperorLouis I. [the Pious], and his wife Irmengarde. Little is known of hisearly life, which was probably passed at the court of his grandfatherCharlemagne, until 815, when he became ruler of Bavaria. When Louis in817 divided the empire between his sons, Lothair was crowned jointemperor at Aix-la-Chapelle and given a certain superiority over hisbrothers. In 821 he married Irmengarde (d. 851), daughter of Hugo, countof Tours; in 822 undertook the government of Italy; and, on April 5, 823,was crowned emperor by Pope Paschal I. at Rome. In Nov. 824 hepromulgated a statute which reserved the supreme power to the secularpotentate, and he afterwards issued ordinances for the good government ofItaly. On his return to his father's court, his step-mother, Judith, persuaded him to secure a kingdom for her son Charles, a scheme which wascarried out in 829. Lothair, however, soon changed his attitude andspent the succeeding decade in constant strife over the division of theempire with his father. He was alternately master of the empire, andbanished and confined to Italy; at one time taking up arms in alliancewith his brothers and at another fighting against them whilst the boundsof his appointed kingdom were in turn extended and reduced. When Louis was dying in 840, he sent the imperial insignia to Lothair, who, disregarding the various partitions, claimed the whole of theempire. Negotiations with his brother Louis and his half-brotherCharles, both of whom armed to resist this claim, were followed by analliance of the younger brothers against Lothair. A decisive battle wasfought at Fontenoy on June 25, 841, when, in spite of his personalgallantry, Lothair was defeated and fled to Aix. With fresh troops heentered upon a war of plunder but was compelled to surrender Aix to hisbrothers. In June 842 the brothers met on an island in the Sâone andagreed to an arrangement which eventually developed into the treaty ofVerdun (843). By this Lothair received Italy and the imperial title, together with a stretch of land between the North and Mediterranean seaslying along the valleys of the Rhine and the Rhône. He abandoned Italyto his eldest son, Louis, and remained in his new kingdom, engaged inalternate quarrels and reconciliations with his brothers, and in effortsto defend his lands from the attacks of the Normans and the Saracens. In855 he fell ill and divided his lands between his three sons. On Sept.23 he entered the monastery of Prüm, where he died six days later.[Encyclopædia Britannica, 1961 ed., Vol. 14, p. 402, LOTHAIR I,]3
