William I de Cantilupe1,2 (M) b. c 1150, d. 1239 Pedigree
| Father-Bio* | c 1120 | Walter de Cantilupe2 |
| Note* | William de Cantilupe, the first of this family upon record, served theoffice of sheriff for the cos. of Warwick and Leicester in the 3rd, 4th,and 5th years of King John [1202, 1203, and 1204]. In the next year hewas made governor of the castles of Hereford and Wilton, and wassubsequently sheriff of Herefordshire. In the 11th of the same reign[1210-11], being then the king's steward, he gave 40 marks for thewardship of Egidia, Lady of Kilpeck, widow of William Fitz-Warine, and inthree years afterwards, when the king was excommunicated by Pope InnocentIII, he remained so faithful as to become one of the monarch's chiefcounsellors. We find him, however, arrayed afterwards under the baronialbanner and joining in the invitation to Louis of France. But within thesame year he forfeited estates of Richard de Engaine and Vitalis deEngaine, two leading barons in the insurrection, and was appointedgovernor of Kenilworth Castle, co. Warwick. In the reign of Henry III,he continued attached to the cause of royalty, and acquired immensepossessions in the shape of grants from the crown of forfeited lands. Hed. in 1238, leaving five sons, viz., William, his heir; Walter, a priest;John, Lord of Snitterfield; Nicholas, of Ilkeston; and Thomas, LordChancellor of England. | Note* | Count of Bar-le-Duc and Mousson; opponent of the Emperor Henry V;Crusader; went with Louis VII on Second Crusade, 1147; founded the Prioryof Moncon and the monastery at Rieval. [Roderick W. Stuart, Royalty forCommoners, 3rd ed., Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore MD, 1998] ---------- Barrois, ancient county, then duchy, on the western frontier of Lorraine,a territory of the Holy Roman Empire, of which Barrois was long a fiefdomor holding before being absorbed piecemeal by France. The centre andcapital was the town that later came to be known as Bar-le-Duc, in themodern French département of Meuse. Because of its location between France and Germany, the dukedom was formany years of uncertain loyalty. In 951 the German emperor Otto I gavethe countship of Barrois (i.e., the district of Bar), at the time a fiefof the duchy of Lorraine, to Frederick of Ardenne. When Frederick'sgreat-great-grandson Renaud (Reynald) inherited the countship, he foundedthe House of Bar. The counts of Bar increased their wealth and became themost powerful vassals of the dukes of Lorraine, with whom, however, theycarried on endless struggles, usually fighting in the French ranks, whilethe dukes adhered to the Germans. Count Henry III made an alliance withEdward I of England and the German king Adolf of Nassau against France.Defeated in battle with the French, Henry III was forced in 1301 to dohomage to the French king Philip IV for that part of the Barrois west ofthe Meuse River, which was claimed as being in the mouvance, or feudaldependency, of France and which from then on was called the 'Barroismouvant.' In 1354 Robert of Bar took the title of duke of Bar. In 1420 René ofAnjou, who had inherited the dukedom, married Isabella, heiress of theDuke of Lorraine, so that on the death of the latter (1431) the Barroisand Lorraine were united. From then on the Barrois shared the fate ofLorraine, which was annexed to the French crown in 1766 on the death ofStanislaw Leszczynski, the former king of Poland, to whom it had beengranted in 1738. | Note* | After Hugh III died in the Holy Land in 1104, the young boy Hugh IV wastaken into King Henry I's court for his education, and is said to havebeen brought up as one of the King's sons. Hugh IV was knighted by HenryI but seems to have responded ungratefully, because he supported Amauride Montfort in his rebellion against Henry in 1118, but he was forgivenby his royal patron and reinstated in his manors. In 1120 there werefurther intrigues, which induced the Pope to intervene and arrange areconciliation. Hugh IV seems later to have atoned by founding (orconfirming the foundaton of) the Abbey of Beaubec. In fact, in 1134 hewas made, with William de Roumare, Earl of Lincoln, a Commander of thefrontiers; but when Stephen became King, he once again showedinconsistancy in his loyalty. In 1141 he was on the French side in a siege that the future King HenryII made of LaFerte, which was burnt down. At Whitsun 1147 he accompaniedLouis the Young, King of France, on the Second Crusade. After Henry II became King he siezed two of Hugh IV's manors - those ofWendover and Houghton, Bedfordshire, and he was much more unfortunate in1173 when the young Prince Henry, in rebellion against his father HenryII, stormed and burnt Gournay Castle, taking Hugh and his elder sonprisoner. Like his father, Hugh IV was an enthusiastic supporter of the Crusades. At great age he took part in another expedition to Palestine in 1180 butdied that same year in Italy. Hugh IV married twice, each time into a leading family. Beatrice deVermandois was a granddaughter of King Henri of France; her sister Isabelhas seven proven descents to Charlemagne (Weiss, Ancestral Roots).[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #6402]1 | |

In the beginning, she describesMelisende's notorious father Thomas de Marla de Coucy and her grandfatherEnguerrant I and her brother Enguerrand II. She also describes theimportance of the strategic location of Coucy, its strength as a greatbastion and why the Lords of Coucy were such a leading family of warriorknights. | Note* | Gerard was a witness to the foundation charter of the Nunnery of HolyTrinity at Caen in 1082. He supported William Rufus in his quarrels withhis brother Robert, Duke of Normandy. Yet in 1096 he joined Robert onthe first crusade. As a result of royal favor, Gerard extended theEnglish estates and even more lands came from a valuable alliance withthe Warenne family, his wife Edith being a daughter of William I, Earl ofSurrey. He became the lord of a Norfolk barony, which included the chiefmanor of Caister, and Cautley, Kimberley, Lesingham, Swathing (Hardinghamparish), Bedingham and Hingham; and also the manors of Mapledurhan,Oxford and Wendover, Buckinghamshire. In 1104 he returned to the HolyLand on a pilgrimage with his wife and died there. [Brøderbund WFT Vol.3, Ed. 1, Tree #6402]2

| Note* | The name of Gurney or Gournay is derived from the town of Gournay inNormandy. Hugh de Gournay, Lord of Gournay and the adjacent territory ofLe Brai, was one of the Norman barons who commanded at the Battle ofMortimer against the French in 1054. He came over to England with DukeWilliam and was present at the Battle of Hastings. These Norman baronsof Gournay deduced their lineage from Eudes, a follower of Rollo, to whomthat chieftain assigned the fortress of Gournay, when he divided Neustriaamong his dependents; they continued to retain these Norman fiefs untilthe reign of John, when they were seized upon by Philip-Augustus. [JohnBurke, History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. I, R.Bentley, London, 1834-1838, p. 484, Gurney, of Keswick] There is no specific source from which it is certain that Hugh III wasthe son of Hugh II, but it is probable. He may also have been at theBattle of Hastings, but is not on Professor Douglas's confirmed list.About 1079 he extended the Gournay estates by acquiring some 24 villagesin the Beauvois, and thereby became a vassal of the King of France. Hewas one of a small group of Norman barons who helped to reconcile Williamthe Conqueror and his rather rebellious eldest son, Robert Curthose. Incontract to the Norman-French lands, his possessions in England weredecidedly modest, for in Domesday (1086) he is shown holding just threemanors in Essex - Fordham, Liston and Ardleigh. Before 1093 he retiredto Normandy and ended his days as a monk at the Abbey of Bec. Seeseparate notes on his wife Basilia de Flaitel. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 3,Ed. 1, Tree #6402]2 | |

| Note* | It is not explicitly stated that Hugh II de Gournay was the son of HughI, but this is highly probable. He played a significant part in theevents of his time. Before 1035 he was a witness to a charter of theyouthful Duke William. In his early career he made a mark as a sea-goingwarrior, and in 1036 he was one of the commanders of the Norman fleetthat took the Anglo-Saxon Prince Edward (later the Confessor) to England,in that young man's hope that with the help of his mother, Queen Emma, hecould gain the English throne upon the death of Canute. But he was notwelcome there, and returned to Normandy to bide his time. Hugh II was one of the three named leaders of the Norman knights in thebattle of Mortemer in 1054. When he died is not certain, but it may havebeen during a battle against the French King Henri I. He lived to aconsiderable age, being known in his later days as 'old Hugh'. We knownothing of his wife. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #6402]1 | |

| Note* | The Gournays are ancestors of people usually found today with the name inthe form Gurney. The name is derived from Gournay-en-Brai, a fortifiedtown in the Neufchatel district of the Dept. of Seine Inferieure inFrance. The notable medieval family of de Gournay had a family traditionthat they were descended from Eudes, one of the senior henchmen (orpossibly relation) of Rollo, the Viking chieftan who was successful insettling his followers in what became Normandy; and in persuading theFrench King, Charles the Simple, to allow them to stay, in a settlementof 911. In the following year, Rollo is said to have assigned theterritory of Le Brai, containing the town of Gournay, to Eudes. A son ofEudes, Hugh, is said to have suceeded as Lord of Gournay and to havebuilt its fortifications, which are certainly of very early date. There are no written records that can be dated before the 990s. It istherefore with Renaud (ie, Reginald), possibly a son of Hugh I, and hiswife Alberarda, that the Gournay pedigree begins; and they are known tous because it is in a foundation deed of the Priory of La Ferte-en-Braidating from between 989 and 996 that they are named as the parentss ofGautier (i.e., Walter) de Ferte, the actual founder. But it is withGautier's elder brother Hugh I, also named in the deed, and commendinghis brother's action, who succeeded Renaud as Lord of the main property,Gournay. Gautier's line ended with his gradson, another Hugh, but named de laFerte, who died as a monk; and the la Ferte estate reverted to the seniorline. The books Record of the House of Gournay pts 1 & 2 -over-glamorizes the family but contains much historical material[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #6402]1 | |
