| Note* | Cunedda Wledig (Latin-Cunetacius, English-Kenneth), King of North Wales(born c. 380). Cunedda or Cunedag Wledig (the Imperator) was a northernBritish chieftain, a sub-King of Gododdin who ruled Manau Gododdin on theFirth of Forth around Clackmannan. Not much is known about his life inthe North, though an ancient poem generally known as the Marwnad Cuneddarecords his wars against the kingdoms of Coel Hen and his descendants, when 'the forts will tremble.....in Caer Weir [supposedly Durham] andCaer Liwelydd [Carlisle]'. Cunedda's paternal ancestors bore Roman namesfor three generations, including Paternus of the Red Robe, a name whichhas brought suggestions that the family ruled North of Hadrian's Wall insome sort of official Roman capacity. They were probably leaders of theVotadini tribe and were on excellent terms with the Roman administrationsouth of Hadrian's Wall and may have formed part of a pro-Romanborderland buffer zone after the irruptions of AD 367/9. Paternus'Red-Robe may even suggest the official purple garb of the RomanAdministration. His maternal grandmother was supposedly the granddaughterof Conan Meriadoc, male heir of the legendary Welsh King, Eudaf Hen. Hewas therefore chosen by the northern Welsh to help them in their fightagainst the invading Irish. Nennius reports: Maelgwn, the great king, was reigning among the Britons in the region ofGwynedd, for his ancestor Cunedag, with his sons, whose number was eight, had come previously from the northern part, that is from the region whichis called Manau Gododdin, one hundred and forty-six years before Maelgwnreigned. And with great slaughter they drove out from those regions theScotti who never returned again to inhabit them. The Harleian MS 3859 further tells us: 'These are the names of the sons of Cunedda, whose number was nine:Tybion, the first-born, who died in the region called Manau Gododdin anddid not come hither with his father and his aforesaid brothers. Meirion, his son, divided the possessions among his [Tybion's] brothers. 2.Ysfael, 3. Rhufon, 4. Dunod, 5. Ceredig, 6. Afloeg, 7. Einion Yrth, 8.Dogfael, 9. Edern. This is their boundary: from the river which is calledDyfrdwy [the Dee] , to another river, the Teifi; and they held very manydistricts in the western part of Britain.' Other sons, generally considered more legendary, may have included Gwron,Mael, Coel and Arwystl. Daughters were Tegeingl and Gwen, the wife ofAmlawdd Wledig. It seems clear therefore that Cunedda and his war bands rode clean acrossBritain to assist their Western cousins. Soon only Llyn, Arfon,Arllechwedd and the majority of Anglesey remained in Irish hands. Cuneddaalso took raiding parties further south and expelled the Ui Liathain fromGwyr, Cedweli and parts of Dyfed. He finally settled down in Rhos whichwas the original heartland of Gwynedd. His family founded a number ofRoyal dynasties in the regions now named after his many sons: Meirionydd,Ysfeilion, Rhufoniog, Dunoding, Ceredigion, Afflogion, Dogfeiling andEdeyrnion. The main question in Cunedda's life concerns the date of these events. P.C. Bartrum suggests a time frame no earlier than AD 370 and no later thanAD 430. The latter date appears to conform to the general consensus ofopinion, though a little later is possible. Perhaps the western migrationof Cunedda and his men was part of the distinct policy of a High-Kinglike Vortigern Vorteneu. The figure of one hundred and forty-six yearsbefore King Maelgwn Gwynedd's reign, on the other hand, might suggest aperiod around the 380s. A Roman mercenary movement following MagnusMaximus' troop withdrawal has been suggested, though indications of hisson's rule in the area would contradict this possibility. | Note* | Gwrthefyr, King of Dyfed (Latin, Vortiporius/English, Vortepor).Gwrthefyr was Aircol's son. He is better known to history as Vortepor the'tyrant of the Demetians' denounced by the early 6th century monk,Gildas, in his De Excidio Britanniae. His reign was apparently dogged byinvasions from the powerful King Mćlgwn of Gwynedd. Gwrthefyr's memorialstone, discovered at Castell Dwyran, provides clear evidence of hishistoricity. The inscription: 'Memoria Voteporigis Protictoris' showsthat he used the Roman title of Protector, rather than King. This hasstrengthened the idea that his Irish ancestors were brought into Dyfed asmercenary peacekeepers, protecting the area against attack from fellowHibernians. This leading family from the tribe of theDéssi had crossed the Irish Sea three generations earlier to settle inWest Wales (See Aed Brosc's Ancestry). Triffyn the Bearded appears tohave married Gwledyr, the heiress of the British Kings of Dyfed, in themid-5th century, though she was probably somewhat younger than him.Together, they inherited the kingdom. His name, 'Tribune', may indicatethat his family was brought over by the Roman administration to helpprotect the area against invading fellow Hibernians. | Note* | Ednyfed (Latin-Demetius, English-Edmund), King of Dyfed (born c. AD 373)King Anwn Dynod's son. Ednyfed, alias Dyfed, appears to have been thepersonification of his father's powerbase in South-West Wales. He wasprobably born there in the late 4th century and hence was named after it.The area was then still known by the Roman name of Demetia, or theCivitas Demetarum, named after the local Celtic tribe of the Demetae. Itis not clear whether his father died before or after the final withdrawalof Roman troops from Britain around AD 410, but Ednyfed certainly appearsto have upheld the family honour and soon established a local monarchy. Ednyfed married and had at least two sons, Gloitgwyn and Dyfnwal. TheDyfed dynasty continued with the former, down to his son, King Clotri.Dyfnwal may have inherited a sub-region of the kingdom, but his apparentson, Ynyr Gwent, moved eastward upon acquiring the kingdom of Gwentthrough an advantageous marriage. His bestknown poems are those lamenting the deaths of his cousin, Urien Rheged,Cynddylan of Pengwern and Llywarch's own sons. He was apparently presentat the former's assassination, and it was left to Llywarch to recover theunfortunate Urien's head!
