- Charles Cosby, I the founder of the family in Virginia, was born 9/12/1585 at Stradbally. He was doubtless induced to settle in Virginia through his connection with the Zouches who had extensive grants of land in that colony. He is said to have settled in York or Warwick in 1626. - Alexander Cosby succeeded his father and seems to have been engaged during the whole of his life time in warfare with the O'Moores. Camden, in his life of Elizabeth, recounts his being once taken by treachery, during a conference with Rory Oge, near Leighlin, and that he was rescued when bound to a tree, by Harpole, but not before he had received a wound from a knife inflicted by Rory. He married Dorcas, daugher of William Sidney, Esq. of Oxford in Kent (grandnephew of William Sydney, Lord of Cranleigh) by whom he had 15 children. This lady, who had been one of the maids-of-honor to Queen Elizabeth and who was second cousin of Sir H. Sidney, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, obtained through her influential connections at court, grants in Leix so extensive, that at that period, the family were the territorial Lords of more that a moiety of Queen's County. The feud with the O'Moores enduring, however, in all its lawless violence, came at length to issue in 1596 and proved fatal to Cosby and his eldest son, Francis.
In that year, Anthony O'Moore, the chief of the insurgent clans bearing his name, sent to demand a passage over Stradbally Bridge, but the requisition being deemed by Cosiby a challenge, was promptly and pre-emptorily denied and preparations were commenced without loss of time, to defend the pass should the enemy attempt to force it. The attempt being made by O'Moore on the 19th of May the Lord of Stradbally at the head of his Kern, accompanied by his son and heir, Francis, who had married about a year previously, Ellen, daughter of Thomas Harpole, Esq. of Thrule, and had born to him a son, William, but nine weeks before, met his foe in deadly combat on the bridge while the conflict was witnessed from a window in the Abbey by Dorcas Sidney and her daughter-in-law, Ellen (Harpole) Cosbie. For sometime, the valor of the Cosby's was irresistable and the fortune of the day appeared to be theirs. Alexander, however, pursuing his advantage with extraordinary impetuosity, received a wound which proved at once mortal and instantly turned the tide of battle. The Kern, with melancholy howling for the fate of their leader, began to give away, when Francis Cosby, fearing that he should be entirely abandoned, leaped over the bridge in the hope of making good his retreat to the Abbey; but the instant that he cleared the battlements he was mortally wounded and fell dead into the river. Those scenes, one would suppose, would have appalled the now widowed ladies who witnessed them; yet, it is recorded that Ellen Harpole Cosby with coolest presence of mind, cautioned her mother-in-law to retain her recollection how the elder Cosby fell before his son, Francis, her husband, who had by thus inheriting the estates, even for a few minutes, entitled her to her thirds, or dowery. It is not know how the ladies eventually escaped; but the infant William Cosby, was carried off and preserved by his nurse. O'Moore pursuing his victory, took possession of the Abbey, and after sacking, committed it to flames, when many of the patents and other valuable documents of the family were destroyed in the conflagration. (History of the Cosby Family, by the retired Navy Officer, John S. Carpenter (1860).

- Dorcas Cosby evidently had a very high opinion of her own family, as in all grants of land made by her, as well as in her private writings, she used the name Sidney instead of Cosby. Among the Sidney family papers is a letter from the Earl of Pembroke (Dudley 3rd) to his uncle, Robert, Earl of Leicester, promising to support Dorcas in her differrences with Sir Edward Zouche, her husband's son and heir, and assuring her that Sir Edward would not wrong her. Sir Thomas Zouche died in 1625, and was survived by his wife.
Among the fifteen children of Dorcas Sidney by her first husband, Alexander Cosby, were two sons name John, one born in 1574 and one born in 1589. Both died young. John Cosby, the son of Charles, the emigrant, was probably named after the two uncles.

Frances Cosby1 (M) b. 1510, d. 25 Aug 1580 Pedigree |
| Father-Bio* | | Richard COSBIE2 |
| Occupation* | | General of the Kern/Sheriff of County of Kildare2 |
| Name-Var | | General Francis Cosbie; Francis Cosbie referred to General Francis Cosbie.
Francis Cosby (or Cosbie) became the patriarch of the family in Ireland. He was a man famed for personal courage as well as civil and military talents. When young he served in the wars of King Henry VIII in the Low Countries and was not undistinguished. His abandonment of his native soil arose from the downfall of Sire Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford and first Duke of Somerset, the Lord Protector of England, who had fallen into disfavor and was afterwards beheaded.
After the disgrace and execution of the Duke of Somerset, in 1552, his immediate connections were excluded from and deprived of all hope of preferment. Francis Cosby and his two surviving sons by Mary Seymour, and with his second wife, Elizabeth Palmer, here in the land of his adoption (Ireland) soon found the opportunity of establishing a reputation which he had despaired of effecting in the land of his birth (England). He became an active member of the Pale against the inroads of the Irish, his vigilance, zeal, and success attracting the attention of the Government. He was appointed by Queen Mary, under Her Majesty's sign manual, dated February 14, 1558, General of the Kern, a position of great trust and importance in those times.
In 1559 he represented the borough of Thomaston in Parliament, when he was constituted by Queen Elizabeth as Sheriff of the County of Kildare, being denominated in his patent, dated January 24, in the first year of Her Majesty's reign, "of Even" now "Minister Even", which place he held under an old grant from the Crown, and was invested at the same time with the extraordinary and unenviable privilege of exercising martial law under his own authority solely, and of dealing out punishments, even the most penal, as he should deem meet.
O'Hart, in his "Irish Pedigrees", states that "after Leix had been formed into a county the following seven families were the chief English settlers during the reigns of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth and were called the seven tribes, namely, Cosby, Harrington, Bowen, Rush, Harpole, Hitherington and Hoveton."
Given Stradbally Abbey, Irish Castle, Queen's County, Ireland, 1558.
General Francis Cosby fell in the battle of Glenmalure, at the head of the Kern which he valiantly led to the charge although then 70 years of age (1580).

After the decease of his 1stwife, Blanch, the great heiress of the Duke of Lancaster, he m.Constance, elder dau. and co-heiress of Peter, King of Castile, and inher right assumed the title of King of Castile and Leon, in which regaldignity, as well as in those of Duke of Lancaster, Earl of Richmond,Derby, Lincoln, and Leicester, he had summons to parliament; he waslikewise Duke of Aquitaine and a knight of the Garter. On the decease ofEdward III, this prince was joined in the administration of affairsduring the minority of his nephew, Richard II. He subsequently attemptedthe conquest of Spain at the head of a fine army, and landing at theGroyne, advanced to Compostella, where he was met by John, King ofPortugal, between whom and his eldest dau., the Lady Philippa, a marriagewas concluded. Thence he marched into Castile and there ratified a treatyof peace, by which he abandoned his claim to the throne of Castile andLeon in consideration of a large sum of money and the marriage of Henry,Prince of Asturias, with his only dau. by his 2nd wife, the LadyKatherine Plantagenet. In the latter part of his life he dwelt inretirement, having incurred the displeasure of King Richard by a motionwhich he had made in parliament that his son, Henry of Bolingbroke, should be declared heir to the crown. He d. at Ely House, Holborn, in1399. John of Gaunt m. 1st, in 1359, Lady Blanche Plantagenet, the eventualheiress of the Duke of Lancaster, and had by her, Henry, Philippa, andElizabeth. He m. 2ndly, Constance, elder dau. and co-heir of Peter, Kingof Castile, and by her had an only dau., Katherine. The duke m. 3rdly, in1396, Catherine, dau. of Sir Payn Roet, Guyenne King of Arms, and widowof Sir Otho de Swynford, Knt., by whom, before marriage, he had issue,John, Henry, Thomas, and Joan. These [last] children were legitimated byact of parliament for all purposes, save succession to the throne, in the20th Richard II and derived their surname from the castle of Beaufort, the place of their birth. John of Gaunt, was s. by his eldest son, HenryPlantagenet, b. 1366, surnamed of Bolingbroke, Earl of Hereford, who, upon the deposition of Richard II, was called to the throne as King HenryIV, when his great inheritance, with the Dukedom of Lancaster, and theEarldoms of Hereford, Derby, Lincoln, and Leicester, merged in the crown.[Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited, and Extinct Peerages,Burke's Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 432, Plantagenet, Earls ofChester, &c.] ---------- John OF GAUNT, DUKE OF LANCASTER, also called (1342-62) EARL OF RICHMOND,or (from 1390) DUC (duke) D'AQUITAINE (b. March 1340, Ghent--d. Feb. 3,1399, London), English prince, fourth but third surviving son of theEnglish king Edward III and Philippa of Hainaut; he exercised amoderating influence in the political and constitutional struggles of thereign of his nephew Richard II. He was the immediate ancestor of thethree 15th-century Lancastrian monarchs, Henry IV, V, and VI. The termGaunt, a corruption of the name of his birthplace, Ghent, was neveremployed after he was three years old; it became the popularly acceptedform of his name through its use in Shakespeare's play Richard II. Through his first wife, Blanche (d. 1369), John, in 1362, acquired theduchy of Lancaster and the vast Lancastrian estates in England and Wales. From 1367 to 1374 he served as a commander in the Hundred Years' War(1337-1453) against France. On his return he obtained the chief influencewith his father, but he had serious opponents among a group of powerfulprelates who aspired to hold state offices. He countered their hostilityby forming a curious alliance with the religious reformer John Wycliffe.Despite John's extreme unpopularity, he maintained his position after theaccession of his ten-year-old nephew, Richard II, in 1377, and from 1381to 1386 he mediated between the King's party and the opposition group ledby John's younger brother, Thomas of Woodstock, earl of Gloucester. In 1386 John departed for Spain to pursue his claim to the kingship ofCastile and Leon based upon his marriage to Constance of Castile in 1371.The expedition was a military failure. John renounced his claim in 1388,but he married his daughter, Catherine, to the young nobleman whoeventually became King Henry III of Castile and Leon. Meanwhile, in England, war had nearly broken out between the followers ofKing Richard II and the followers of Gloucester. John returned in 1389and resumed his role as peacemaker. His wife Constance died in 1394, and two years later he married hismistress, Catherine Swynford. In 1397 he obtained legitimization of thefour children born to her before their marriage. This family, theBeauforts, played an important part in 15th-century politics. When Johndied in 1399, Richard II confiscated the Lancastrian estates, therebypreventing them from passing to John's son, Henry Bolingbroke. Henry thendeposed Richard and in September 1399 ascended the throne as King HenryIV.
