| Note* | LEO VI, surnamed 'The Wise' and 'The Philosopher,' Byzantine emperor,886-911. He was the son of Basil I the Macedonian and his second wife,Eudocia Ingerina, although it has been suggested that he was, in fact, the son of Eudocia by Michael III. The chief event of his reign was thecapture of Thessalonica (904) by Mohammedan pirates under the renegadeLeo of Tripolis. In Sicily and Lower Italy the imperial arms wereunsuccessful, and the Bulgarian Symeon, who assumed the title of 'Czar ofthe Bulgarians and autocrat of the Romaei' secured the independence ofhis church by the establishment of a patriarchate. But though Gibbon maybe right in calling his surname 'absurd,' he did lasting work inreforming the civil administration of the empire. His works includeseventeen Oracula, in iambic verse, on the destinies of future emperorsand patriarchs of Constantinople; thirty-three Orations, chiefly ontheological subjects (such as church festivals); Basilica, the completionof the digest of the laws of Justinian, begun by Basil I., the father ofLeo; some epigrams in the Greek Anthology; an iambic lament on themelancholy condition of the empire; and some palindromic verses, curiously called 'karkiuoi' (crabs). The treatise on military tacticts, attibuted to him, is possibly by Leo III, the Isaurian. [EncyclopaediaBritannica, 1961 ed. Vol. 13, p. 930-31. LEO VI] --------- LEO VI, byname LEO THE WISE, or THE PHILOSOPHER (b. Sept. 19, 866--d.May 11, 912, Constantinople), Byzantine coemperor from 870 and emperorfrom 886 to 912, whose imperial laws, written in Greek, became the legalcode of the Byzantine Empire. Leo was the son of Basil I theMacedonian, who had begun the codification, and his second wife, EudociaIngerina. Made coemperor in 870, Leo succeeded to the throne on hisfather's death. His foreign policy was directed mainly against the Arabsand the Bulgars. The able commander Nicephorus Phocas the Elder wasrecalled from his successful campaigns against the Lombards in southItaly to assist in the Balkans. After this Byzantium met with reverses inthe West: Sicily was lost to the Arabs in 902, Thessalonica was sacked byLeo of Tripoli, and the Aegean was open to constant attack from Arabpirates. Steps were taken to strengthen the Byzantine navy, whichsuccessfully attacked the Arab fleet in the Aegean in 908. But the navalexpedition of 911-912 was defeated by Leo of Tripoli. Byzantium's enemyto the north was Simeon, the Bulgar ruler. Hostilities arose out of atrade dispute in 894, and the Byzantines, aided by the Magyars of theDanube-Dnieper region, forced Simeon to agree to a truce. With the helpof the nomadic Pechenegs, however, Simeon in 896 took revenge on theByzantines, forcing them to pay an annual tribute to the Bulgars. During Leo's reign the Russian prince Oleg sailed to Constantinople andin 907 obtained a treaty regulating the position of Russian merchants inByzantium, which was formally ratified in 911. Because of his anxiety fora male heir Leo married four times, thus incurring the censure of thechurch. Educated by the patriarch Photius, Leo was more scholar thansoldier. In addition to completing the canon of laws, he wrote severaldecrees (novels) on a wide range of ecclesiastical and secular problems. He also wrote a funeral panegyric on his father, liturgical poems, sermons and orations, secular poetry, and military treatises. Leo's imageis in a mosaic over the central door of Hagia Sophia. [EncyclopaediaBritannica CD '97] ---------- NOTE: For many years there have been challenges to Leo VI's maleparentage. Lindsay L. Brook (in Genealogist 2:6, Spring 1981), quotingCyril Mango, argues that the Emperor Michael III, whose mistress wasEudocia Ingerina, wife of Basil I, was the father of Leo VI. ChristianSettipani (Settipani, C. 1991), airs the same view. Both sources, andothers, too, say that the male parentage cannot be satisfactorilyresolved, but the weight of evidence leans toward Michael III. At thisjuncture, I accept the Michael III parentage. | Note* | The pedigree of Augustine H. Ayers, as found on CD-100, AutomatedArchives, Automated Family Pedigrees #1, names Radulf, Vicomte de Brosse,as the father of Rothilde. Stuart, however, in Royalty for Commoners,3rd Edition, 1998, names Ademar, Vicomte of Brosse, and Melisendis as theparents of Rothilde. I have changed my records to agree with that givenby Stuart.1 | |
